Wooden Dowels from Michaels Craft Store - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page

I got a 3/4" thick dowel from the section of this store that has a lot
of different thickness dowels that are 36" long. The brand name is
Forster. The label says it's hardwood. Offhand, it looks like oak to
me. Do you guys know exactly what kind of wood these dowels are? I just
made a perch with it because the one that came with the cage was too
thin (1/2"). If it's white oak, it's safe, but if it's red oak, it's
not safe.

Also, Michaels has a lot of wooden products like trays, bird houses,
ship wheels, boats, etc. all made out of a very white, lightweight wood
and these things are all made in China. Do you know what kind of wood
this is?

I did not know that.

Having done it for WAY too many yars, I HATE cutting perches
with a purple passion, and now only use those screw-on fake-branch
things. The extra cost is worth waht I save in tranquilizers. ("I was
only off by a half inch!")

I'm blessed with having lots of manzanita growing on my property. It
makes great perches. Unfortuantely it's the only thing that grows well.

That's not my site but gives an idea of what manzanita is like. At
those prices I should change professions and start harvesting my back yard!
