I just rescued two parakeets and their cage from a nasty home. They are four
months old and beautiful. But no matter how much I scrub the cage it still
reeks of cigarette smoke. They, the bids, were also exposed to the smoke all
the time and were kept in a small bedroom closet. They are thin and scared
half to death. I have 4 other parakeets and they welcome the newcomers. So
how do I clean the cage or do I buy a new one? How do I "detoxify" a bird
from environmental impurities they were exposed to? I use Kaytee Select seed
brand. Is that ok or should I try a different seed brand? Thanks. Jenn

The bird seed you have should be fine; it works for your four so it should
work for the rescued ones. Sounds like they came from a stressful
(hateful!) home so you want to make them feel comfortable first and get them
to eat well.
Is the other bird cage large enough with your other four birds to introduce
the two new ones in with them? You say they "welcome" them. If it isn't
large enough, and you can afford it, I'd buy a new cage. But give them some
time to adjust first.

Jenn,
I have read 1/2 water & 1/2 bleach can be used to clean. You could also
call an avian vet and ask for recommendations on how to clean it. I
have donated several cages to a vet and have seen her staff outside
cleaning other (boading) cages, so a vet might be a good source.
I agree with Jill. if you can put them all in one cage, which them
would probably be happier with the others, put them in with the others.
If not, try to buy larger cage. If the seed is good enough for your
birds, it should be good enough for the new ones. God only knows what
they were feed before.
What ever you do, you have made the first step (a major one for the
birds) by rescuing them and showing an interest in giving them a good
caring home.
Hats off to you!

Jenn,
I have read 1/2 water & 1/2 bleach can be used to clean. You might try
calling an avian vet and ask their advice.
If your birds cage is big enough for all of them, try that one. If
not, I would try to get one large enough for all of them.
The bird food shouldn't be a problem. It sounds like your birds are
healthy. God only knows what the two you rescued ate before. But if
they are thin, probably not the right food.
You have made the first step for these birds by rescuing them. Good
job!
Hats off to you,

The birds are a world of difference better off than they were, so I would
not spend any time worrying about diet. As was mentioned god only knows what
they had before. The cage probably would need not only good scrubbing but
time to "air out". Hopefully the birds will get along ok with each other.
The new comers will probably take a while to come around, but they should.
Even well cared for birds go through a period of getting used to a new home,
these birds may take a little longer.
If you can safely keep the new birds in the same cage with your birds, you
can take the cage to a car wash and give it a good going over with one of
the hand held units there, then make sure you give it a good rinse. See if
that does not get the smell off a little.

Jynxie got his period. Don't get upset...this is just the way he is. I
keep putting him in the bozo bin, but he changes his name, behaves for a few
weeks, and then goes hormonal again. Back in the bin you go Jynx!

Probably the way the man in this picture is rescuing two cages.

We are in the midst of rehabbing a blue-fronted Amazon who was physically
abused, and also living in a heavy cigarette-smoking household. Our local
pet store asked us to take him, after they purchased him from someone who
said he had to get rid of the bird because it made too much noise, only to
discover the bird was having seizures, bit everyone it could reach, and
seemed very ill. We took little Finnegan into our flock, and have tried to
improve his life.
Finnegan has come around a long ways in the eight months we've had him, and
now accepts and even invites us to interact with him, he has gradually lost
his fear of hands (we are sure he was hit by his previous owner!) and will
step up without removing chunks of human flesh or dashing around his cage to
stay as far away from us as possible. Its great having him call us, talk to
us, and cuddle with us, and its hard to believe that last June, he seemed to
hate the world.
The tobacco smell and effects, on the other hand, are taking a long time to
fade. For the first 6 weeks, he wouldn't even groom himself, he just slept,
and ate, and sat there. He got a new cage, and was most willing to eat a
very healthy diet of pellets, fruits and veggies, with seeds/nuts as a small
treat only on Fridays (yes, our house is a chorus of "It's treat FRIDAY"
once a week!), and he also seems to enjoy being misted with a spray bottle
daily, as well as bathing in his water dish and the occasional spray in the
kitchen sink. Sometimes though, we can still smell a musty dead-ashtray
smell from him, and it makes me so sad to think of this poor little guy
being abused in such a manner, and yes, I do consider cigarette-smoking
around pets or children who cannot choose to leave to be a form of physical
abuse. We're sure it will take a long time for him to lose the smell, he
lived in that home for 3 years, its bound to take at least that long to go
away, and we know that as with humans, his life-span has probably been
shortened, but that makes him no less sweet.
Anyhow, best of luck to you. It's great to hear of birds being taken out of
a poor situation, and brought into a healthy, happy environment where they
can flourish and be loved.

This is a nice story, good to hear that you are having success with giving
your Amazon a new home. But I am surprised that the bird still smells of
smoke. When I got my cockatiel, he also smelled (lightly) of cigarette
smoke, but it went away after a shower or two.
