It appears at a few of it's stores in the USA, Petsmart
wants to run a test of selling ferrets at these stores,
basically for the Christmas season.
I don't know about you, but I think this is appalling!!!
Not only have they had a company doctrine of not
selling cats and dogs, only making room for local
shelters to adopt out these animals, one would think
it would extend to ferrets, who already have enough
of a problem of being Christmas presents for someone
who didn't want it, and we know where they end up.
I think this is a money grab and should be protested
to the hilt.

We're talking about *PetSMART* here, not Petco.

I guess I'll be shopping elsewhere. Personally, I liked Petsmart
because they don't sell ferrets, and have a great adoption program for
cats and dogs. I refuse to shop as store that sell ferrets.

Pardon my ignorance,
But where would one buy a ferret? through a breeder? Or through adoption
only? I'm new to ferrets, I took a ferret from a person who didn't want
her any longer and I am trying to work with her. and to get her to eat
again. I found immense help from forums. But I don't know where people
normally buy their ferret? This female was purchased from a petco. Thats
all I know.

No, I don't. I don't do business w/ *either* of them, unless it's absolutely
necessary. I don't think *any* animal supply stores should sell
ferrets.....or dogs or cats.
I was simply, in my own aparently inadequate way, attempting to point out
that the current uproar is against *PetSmart*, & not Petco, who's been
selling ferrets for some time now. Whenever I'm in need of supplies & the
only place close by is a Petco, I *tell* them my opinion of their selling
ferrets - that it goes against their so-called belief that people should
adopt animals from shelters, that selling ferrets goes against that
advertised belief of theirs, & that they suck because of it.
Given the choice, since I live in a very small town & have to go elsewhere
to buy anything, I prefer to buy my ferret supplies online, so I don't have
to go into *any* of those places.

Ferret shelters. Small private breeders, many of whom can be found online by
doing a search in your area. Ferret shelters.
Did I mention ferret shelters?

Yes I know about shelters, I am currently supporting a feral colony of
cats right now. The ferret I have was on its way to a shelter, but I
took her and am trying to learn all I can for her. So she does not have
to be displaced again. Just because I didn't know where others buy there
ferrets, do not think that I don't care.
I hope this is not a NG that jumps on new people, that won't help my
ferret. I was point this way from a live journal ferret community, I
think I will just go back there.

The only time people in this ng jump on new people is when they (a) don't do
their research first; (b) come in here right off the bat w/ rude or
"know-it-all" remarks to some of the *extremely* ferret-knowledgable people
who populate this group (not including myself in this catagory, BTW); or (c)
they're obvious trolls.
Don't leave. You'll learn one hell of a lot in here, if you want to.

This is why I replied to the fist post saying:
>Oh I see and understand. so far I have bought from theferretstore.com
, >because the ferret that I have loves the hairball remedy.
This second post was truly about how others get their ferret. I really
did not know, and If I don't know and what to find out, I will ask. I
did pop out of no where, buts thats where new people come from.
I have been in the Aquaria NGS for years, some good, some bad. Hopefully
this one is not bad.
Right now I am in a NG that is trying to keep the new comers from being
jumped on and chewed out, By Clickish posters who make up their own
science. I just didn't want to join a new NG with that same problem, if
there is A problem.

People normally buy them from pet stores. And generally the buyer knows
nothing about them, and the pet store doesn't care if they do or not. I
bought my first two ferrets from some old man at a flea market (that was
a very *long* time ago). I probably would have looked at a shelter to
begin with if I knew they existed, but I was a stupid person who didn't
know anything about ferrets or where to buy them. After the first two,
I started looking at shelters, and have found all my ferrets at one ever
since. I've taken a few trips to shelters far away just to get a
particular pair of furballs I found online. There are too many shelters
out there for me to even consider supporting a pet store who sells them,
and if that were my only option I can honestly say that I wouldn't have
any at all.

Why do you think people are thinking you do not care? I didn't see
anywhere that anyone remotely suggested this. So what do you know about
ferrets already? What kind of cage do you have? What kind of bedding
do you have for her? What are you feeding her? Do you have a vet who
knows about ferrets? What kind of litter do you use?
Anyway... feel free to ask questions here if you need help with something.
Also, the book /Ferrets for Dummies/ is a pretty good book that you
might want to check out. Don't let the title deceive you, many people
have bought the book and aren't "dummies". It has a lot of good
information and I'd suggested taking a look at it if you haven't already.

You will find someone like that on almost any NG out there. That's life
on Usenet. Only you choose to let it bother you or ignore/killfile
those people.
Bye.

I have a four floor cage, the bottom floor is where she uses her litter
box. The first floor is where her water bottles are and food, the second
floor is where all her toys are, and the top floor is her ferret stuffed
armchair, her beds and some toys there are hammocks on all floors except
for the ground floor. I feed her ferret food from the ferret store. com
, She also gets the high calorie goo and the hair ball remedy. And
sometimes a bit of boiled chicken. And ferret treats from the above
mentioned website. She has vitamins for her water, and she gets a ferret
vitamin for digesting food, I don't have the bottle right in front of
me. she has ear swabs/wipes and also ferret shampoo and an upper
respiratory remedy on the side in case. Oh and Ferret shampoo. Again
from the above mentioned site.
She is in my spare bedroom. During the day her door is opened and she
has that room, my room and the bathroom and hallway. she has a litter
box in the bathroom and one in the hallway. From 11:00am to 8:00pm
My husband has made tubes for her for trough out the upstairs which she
seems to enjoy allot and two cats that play with her.
I saw that book at petco, I will pick it up.
Bye,
Kay
