I HAVE A 3 YEAR OLD GOLDEN RETRIEVE, I AM LOOKING FOR SOME HELP WITH HER HEEL WORK. SHE IS TRAINING FOR WORKING TRIALS, HER FEILD WORK IS GREAT BUT HER HEEL WORK IS LACKING.
SHE HEELS BEAUTIFULLY IN GENERAL BUT IS TO WIDE FOR COMPATIONS AND LAGS BEHIND WHEN OFF LEAD. I HAVE TRIED EVERYTHING I KNOW AND NOW NEED SOME NEW IDEAS. SO WOULD BE GREATFUL OF ANY ADVICE.

Heel with her up against a wall, her inbetween you and the wall. That way she will have to stand closer to you and will get used to being that close. To keep her from lacking, change your pace often. Go very slow and then speed up quick, almost a jog.. making sure you are saying "OK! CMON! LETS GO!" being very upbeat about it. It doesn't hurt to give her a little pop on the collar too, to let her know you mean RIGHT NOW, not in 5 minutes. Also do plenty of direction changing, if she doesn't follow you, she gets a pop on the collar. She then learns that she has to watch in order to get praise. When she is keeping up, make sure you are saying "Good girl! Nice! Good Heel!" The whole time to keep her motivated. Add plenty of About Turns. A good exercise is put two cones about 6 feet apart. Do figure 8's around them, turning very sharp and letting her know to watch you and adapt to your pace and body.
