My roommate has checked around for a White-bellied Caique
and is finding pet store prices ranging from $1300-$1500. Why
are they so expensive? Even much larger birds such as African
Grays cost a lot less. Is it just the usual matter of supply and
demand, or is there something else about Caiques that command
such high prices?

Whereabouts do you live? That sounds overpriced if it's in US$. I've seen
them in my neck of the woods (NE OH) for around $600.

I'm near San Jose, CA.
Is "around $600" a breeder price or a pet store price? One local
pet store in my area is asking $1349 for one, and the other wants
$1550!

Here in the area of Minneapolis I've seen them priced at $500 at a bird fair
and at about $900 at a big chain pet store.

I have been told by pet store owners that Caiques are difficult to breed, hence
the price.
