Bourkes Parakeet Behavior - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page

Hi all -

I have a regular Bourkes Parkaeet named Bodhi. He's quite the
character, and a really neat little bird.

I have a question about a certain behavior that he does. A lot of
times he'll give some really cute vocal utterances.....like little
chirps. I will come over when he does this, and make kissing sounds
which he really seems to enjoy. When I make the kissing sounds he
always flares his tail feathers, and begins chirping very softly. He
seems to mimik each time I make the kissing sounds......he chirps, and
flares his tail feathers...

This bird was hand fed as a baby, and is very tame. It will fly on my
finger from a good distance away....and is really into the routine I
have every morning.....sitting on my vanity watching me get ready for
work.

Anyway.....if anyone knows why Bodhi flares his tail feathers when I
make kissing sounds....I would appreciate it. Something tells me that
this little bird might be wanting to have me as a mate :)

Thanks
David

There's another possibility. Any chance he's catching any of your warm
breath? Bourkes and Scarlet-chesteds flare their tails and overextend
their wings to capture heat.
