I just this evening noticed that my Dusky, Sidekick, has some small bare
spots on his chest and tummy. All the birds are just coming out of a heavy
molt, so I didn't realize he's apparently been pulling out some feathers.
I watched him for awhile and he's chewing at those spots like they itch.
I have some Aloe Vera gelcaps here... wondering if I can squeeze out the
gel and rub it on his "itchies?" And would it do any good to put some in
his water too?
TIA!

Mama, my breeder recommends spray Benadryl for these situations. Easily
accessible and bird safe!

Take him to an avian vet.

Just wanted to mention that one of the symptoms of giardia, is feather
plucking.

Eeeeeemmmm... I think that's a little premature. You know I'll take him if
he needs to go, but (to me) itchies don't constitute an emergency.
I think I'll try the Benadryl spray first.

Yes! This occurred to me last night as well. Problem: I'm too weak right
now to start them on another round of treatment. It takes a lot of energy
to towel and give meds to 16 birds, (and disinfect 12 cages!) especially
when there's no one to help. :(
*I* have to get well before I can do anything for them. I'm really in a bad
situation...

Again, what if you're wrong? And why involve a vet only in emergencies?

Why not at least CALL your avian vet and get HIS opinion? Who's better
qualified to make a diagnosis and treat, or recommend a treatment, than
your own vet, who knows you and your birds?

Exactly given that ALL birds are "experts" at concealing
injuries/illness (so as NOT to be "forced" out of the flock) it isn't a bad
idea to take your birds to the vet on a regular basis just as you would a
child. That way IF your bird is starting to develop an illness you'll know
about it and will be able to treat it.
I have a Peachfaced Lovebird that I recently took to the vets after my
beloved 'Tiel of 11 yrs had passed away and the vet discovered that he had
had a slight viral infection. Fortunatly he wasn't yet sheading said
infection in his droppings. He gave me some medicine to give him, and it
cleared him right up. BUT had I not TAKEN him to the vet's for a Well Bird
check-up I would have never known about this infection.

If I'm wrong I'll have to live with the guilt, because right now there's
absolutely nothing I can do about it.

I don't think I'm wrong.
An emergency to me is a bird exhibiting *any* signs of unknown illness.
Since we already know that the birds are considered the source of my
Giardia infection (both my MD and the Vet agree on this) I'm not alarmed
that one of them is showing a known symptom of the infection. If it was
something non-Giardia related, THAT, to me, would be an emergency.
I'm on my third round of Flagyl. The birds and the house dogs have been
treated twice and will be treated at least once more. It's very difficult
to get rid of.

He's already treating them, Jack. He's giving them Flagyl for Giardia. I
just have to get well enough to get them through their next treatment. The
only thing I can do now is try and relieve Sidekick's itchiness until I can
do that.
I have a whole battery of tests coming up this week, plus doctor's
appointments, and on Thurs. a surgical procedure that's going to put me out
of commission for at least for 48 hours. WHAT do you want me to do?

Cowboy,
You know nothing of my situation and nothing of my experience with birds. I
appreciate your advice but you're preaching to the choir.

Noah,
The current situation that the writer finds themself in could very well
be an illness that has recently hit them, and that under "normal"
circumstances they are able to adequately deal with all of their birds.
To make the statement that you did without knowing the whole story is
very irresponsible, and could end up with you looking like the bad guy
instead of someone who has the best interests of the birds at heart.
The better thing to do would be to offer to help them IF:
a) you are able
b) you and the writer live in the same area

All I have is my 81 year old mother and my 'almost ex' husband. My mom
can't help with the birds because they don't like her and I'm afraid she'll
get bitten. The 'almost ex' comes out every morning and does the morning
feeding and paper changing, but I have to feed all the cats/dogs/birds
every afternoon. (He was doing both but can only come mornings now.)
My mom is driving me to all my appointments, but the avian vet is almost 60
miles away on the Interstate. She is afraid to drive on a busy Interstate
and I wouldn't let her anyway.
I'll just have to get through this best I can and do what I can for my
babies until I'm well again.
Thank you for your concern...

Do nothing mama. You are not wonderwoman. Get yourself well first because
quite simply *you* are the most important person in your life.
If you don't get well, your pets and family will suffer in the long term.
In the short term, they will be able to make do.

I don't know how your financial situation is (none of my business), but
could you possibly afford a sort of petsitter to help you until you are on
your feet again? Perhaps your vet could refer someone or could actually
send a trusted employee out to assess the bird. I know I would feel
comfortable with several of the techs at my vet's office coming to my home.
Just a thought....
I do hope you are feeling better soon and that your bird is ok.

I would just again suggest calling him, and reciting the original
paragraph you posted here, and see what he recommends.

Hi Laurie,
I live in a very small town and there are no pet sitters. I've called most
of the local vets in the past and none of them could refer anyone. Oddly
enough, my sister pet sits... but unfortunately, she lives in another
state! LOL
My avian vet is in a large town nearly 60 miles away (no avian vets
locally), so sending out a tech wouldn't be feasible.
My divorce will be final on Wed. so I'm going to be on a fixed income...
and the medical bills are piling up!
Your ideas are sound, and very much appreciated, but they won't work for my
situation.
I'm sure Sidekick will be fine, as will the others, once we get this
Giardia problem cleared up. Hopefully soon!
Many thanks for your kind thoughts...

Is this your signature? Because it isn't very creative when you use the
same retort at least 3 times to different people. Especially when you
advise people in the UK to get an American Kennel Club dog. Why don't you
and your little buddies go back to humping legs in your dog newsgroup?
Don't bother telling me to get a real pet, because I have dogs already.

Well, I tried....I do hope all goes well for you tomorrow. As a former
recipient of spousal spit, I do support the recommendation that you try to
seek out some form of counseling as I did. If you can't afford it,though, I
could recommend some good books to read to help. Once tomorrow is over, I'm
sure your mental state will be better and that just could help your physical
condition to some degree. Best wishes for your big day!
