very ill pet budgie - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
lorraine moran
hi, was wondering if anyone could answer my question about my 10year
old budgie? he keeps falling off his perch, and seems to be blind, not
sure if he is blind but he has never been handeled by human hands so i
cant get near him, hes still brightly coloured and chirpy enough, but
sometimes it seems as if he just sleeps alday and then hes very
lifeless for the rest of that day. I was going to take him to the vet
but when i called and explained his symtoms to the vet , she suggested
that because he was quite old it was possibly a stroke and would be
better to put him to sleep. As hes not like that everyday i was very
reluctant to take him because she might put him to sleep, can anyone
suggest what might be the problem? and how i can make his life more
comfortable. He lives on budgie seed and lettuce, he never eats
anything else,(we think thats why he`s lived so long).

The vet will *not* put him to sleep without your permission, so that excuse
is out. No one here can diagnose your bird over the internet dear...you
need to take him to the vet...and quickly!

Awwww. He may be in his final days. Can you lower the perches so
he's closer to the ground, lowering his seed and water cups also? Or
try putting a towel on the bottom of his cage in case he wants to
stand there. When I knew my budgie was dying, I tried to keep his
surroundings exactly as he liked them....sang to him as much as I
could, played the music he liked softly off and on during the day,
gave him the treats he liked, made sure he was warm and comfortable.
It's difficult to know if he's suffering, but if he's sleeping and
chirping normally, I'd just make sure you do all you can to keep his
stress level down and let him go in his familiar, peaceful home.

Your vet has broken the law by making a diagnosis over the phone and should
be reported. Is your vet an avian vet? If not let me know what town you are
in and I will send details of a proper avian vet to get your birds proper
treatment quickly. 10 years is *not* old for budgies in this country.

I agree. Please take him to an avian vet immediately. Do not take him to the
vet who you talked to over the phone.

Isn't it odd that the OP never got back to me? Either they didn't want to
take it to a vet, or the bird is dead :0(
If one of mine was sick, although I admit I would not post here and ask for
advice, *if* I did, I would be checking back several times a day for useful
replies.Perhaps they simply wanted a free online diagnosis?

Those are just two possibilities.
