Our household normally includes a Felix, large cat, who is
exceptionally sensitive to fleas, and Avery, a ringneck dove.
For the weekend, we are babysitting my parents' cat, Tigre, who turns
out to be rather badly infested with fleas.
Tigre doesn't seem to be very bothered by his fleas, but if we allow
this infestation to spread, it will create serious problems for Felix.
In the past, I've used Sevin-5 (See <http://gardentech.com/>) to control fleas in my home. I'd dust the cat with it, and I'd dust
the carpets with it. But that was before Avery joined our family.
I understand that birds are much more sensitive to poisons than other
kinds of animals are. I know that Sevin is safe for humans, and I know
it's safe for cats, but I don't know that it's safe for doves.
I've just now dusted Tigre down real well with Sevin, and have
temporarily banished himn to the back yard. I'd like to dustthe carpets
down with this, in order to kill any fleas that Tigre might have
deposited there, but I am worried about whether this might present a
hazard to Avery, who often likes to walk around on the carpet, pecking
at various things he finds that he thinks might be edible.
Any advice?

Bob,
I woudln't think you can use that stuff on your carpets... I would imagine
it would get into the air as well as the carpet, and the fumes/dust etc are
bad for the bird?? Maybe you can call the manufacturer and see what they
say about their product?
As far as what you CAN use though, I have no idea. Good luck.

Bob, I'm not sure where you live, but don't they have "Advantage" there?
Here in the US our lives have been changed totally by this miraculous
product. My cats haven't had fleas in 10 years. If you apply it to the
back of the cats' necks, any fleas that bite them will die, and all fleas in
the house will eventually bite them.

Sevin is used by canary and budgie breeders for mite
infestations. They actually dust the birds directly,
however, I don't know the concentrations that are safe.
So you should follow up on the links that Toucanlady
sent and investigate further.

A simpler option would have been to use frontline ot revolution srops on
the visiting cat. It kills fleas ded and there would have been no
infestetion in your home and no need to use anything on your carpets.You
could still use this on your own cat and prevent an infestation.I have 8
dogs, 6 cats and not a flea among them thanks to frontline and revolution.

this is a great thread, just adding my 2cents. isn't it amazing how
many folks have very little interest in the actual health of their
pets.

Bob,
I would apply drops or put a flea collar on the cat and vacuum twice a day
until the fleas are gone.
If you already have fleas in your home, look into a Chemical called Nylar.
It is an insect growth regulator that can be reduced in water and sprayed
onto carpets, furniture, bedding, etc. Because it can be put into a
trigger-spray bottle it is easier to apply without 'drift'. But I wouldn't
let the birds walk on the carpet after spraying, even after it dries.
I don't know if the product is safe for cats.

Hi Bob,
I'm not sure about the carpet dusting only because of the dust particles
stirred up and the potential for respiratory problems. I do know that
Sevin-5 is used directly on wild birds by rehabilitators for the treatment
of external parasites. However during application of the dust, the
rehabbers take care not to create clouds of dust that the bird may inhale.
