Hey ppl,
Well, I'm enjoying time off at the apartment with my tiel. It is
funny, I think he misses the truck.
I made a mistake last night, and I think my tiel is not going to trust
me for a little while. I attempted to trim his nails, and accidently
got into the blood. He sqawked and bit me quite hard (I deserved it).
He demands head scritches all the time now, and I can stroke the
entire length of his body (he protests occasionally, but is much more
mellow now). I'm working on underfeather 'scritches now', he is still
distrustful there though. Rather than cage him at home, I've turned
the kitched laundry room into his 'cage' (there is nothing in there).
I put some toys in, and got a large branch for a climbing perch, along
with his food, etc. and he is quite happy.
One small thing that concerns me. His nails (even before I cut them),
the front ones are all clear. There is one back claw on each foot that
is dark, almost black. Is that normal?
I'm having great difficulty getting him to eat ANYTHING other than
seeds (fruite veggies, etc). I'll keep working though. . ..
Later!

Not positive about the nails, but I think the "normal gray" Tiels toes are
dark. It's been a long time since I have seen one, but seems like the legs
were very dark, as were the nails. Most of the "mutations" which are what
you see now are all different colors and normally have the lighter nails. I
could be all wet on this, but probably just a mixture of colors. It would be
a good idea to find an Avian Vet and have a check up though. Then if you
have problems, and are home, you have a Vet who has a record of the bird. As
Bob had said it would be a good idea to get paper from the Vet showing the
bird is healthy in case you get asked going across a state line.
As to trimming it's no big deal to get a little blood. You should have
some quick stop on hand always for just this reason.
From the way your describing things it sounds like all is going fine. The
diet may never change. Tiels are seed eaters. I have heard people say they
get theirs to eat other stuff, ours will very occasionally try some fruit,
loves cookies, but mostly eats seed. I would not sweat it.
The living arrangement sounds like it should do great for him.

It hurts. If you get a pollys pastel perch for his cage, and put it as the
highest perch, it will wear down his nails so you don't have to clip them. I
personally think there is too much made of birds getting nails trimmed and
never trim unless they are long enough to get caught in things. As I use
pollys pastels, they never get this long.

i did the same thing with my Quaker, even after reading and view pics
in a book. hindsight tells me that NEWBIES probably _do_TOO_much_,
thinking it is 'necessary'. relax, if you didn't clip them for a year
or more, nothing serious would happen. tiel nails are not nearly as
large, curved or sharp as a parrot's (& safely ignored for awhile).
also, from my incident, i decided the bleeding nail really was not that
painful for him, but i felt awful for days. i did trim the rest a day
or so later. you probably should wear gloves. i put the Quaker inside
a sock but he often nailed me anyway, but he would not draw blood normally.
he was very tame did not really want to harm me.

try celery and dark greens of any kind, sliced into thin strips. so far,
beyond Dallas grass, the only other thing they like (a LOT) is grape _stems_.
the won't eat the grape but love to crunch the stem. --Loren
