Help with raising and feeding Mexican Redhead. - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Bruce Buchanan
Group,
I am tired of being my birds mother. I have an eight week old Mexican
redhead that I have been feeding since week two. I am now feeding
three times a day. I am feeding him with a syringe, and as my schedual
allows I feed him frozen vegetable mix with my hand. I can not get
him to be interested in taking any food on his own. I leave him alone
with the vegetables and they are un-thuched when I get home. He is
only interested in food that comes from my hand. Am I expecting too
much too soon?

This bird has a split lower beak. I don't know if it was an injury
or a birth defect. I don't know if he will be able to eat seed so I
am planing on him eating vegetables and other soft protein foods. I
am feeding this bird a blended mix of vegetables, egg yokes, and
cooked grain. This all gets blended together in the blender to be
syringe fed and he loves to eat bits of egg, fish, and vegetables
from my hand. Any on have any ideas on this for me? I would love any
suggestions.

Thanks,
Bruce Buchanan

Great advise. Just wanted to add one more toxic food: Rubarb.

Also all pits. I.E., cherry, peach, etc.. I know some people feed apple
seeds to their birds but they contain arsinic just as the other pits do so I
try to error on the side of caution and don't feed my birds them either.

Depending on the fish it should be just fine (high protine, low fat). Just
be sure all the bones are gone. Bones and crop do not mix well (don't get me
started on Macaws and chicken bones).

Not trying to disagree with Mamabird, just adding some stuff.

Then you shouldn't have gotten an unweaned baby.

Yes, you're expecting too much. Your bird is a BABY. It will probably be
another 4 weeks or more before he's fully weaned.
He should start showing some interest soon in nibbling at foods on his own.
In addition to vegs (I hope you're warming them) try fruits, cheerios, a
little seed, millet spray, pellets. You should NOT rush the weaning
process. It would be frustrating for you AND the bird.

You need to take him to an avian vet, not only about the beak problem (why
didn't you ask the seller what happened to his beak?), but for advice about
feeding/weaning him.
A split beak would be vulnerable to infection. He should have a complete
checkup!

You'll never know if he can eat seeds unless you offer him some. He may be
able to eat pellets... you can even soften them a bit with a little fruit
juice. You're on the right track with the veggies and other soft food;
birds need lots of nutritious "people food."
Foods to avoid (toxic): chocolate, avacado, caffeine, alchoholic beverages,
salty/sugary/fatty foods.

Instead of concocting your own handfeeding formula buy a bag of Kaytee
Exact formula. Just mix with water according to package directions. It has
all the nutrients baby birds need... the stuff you're mixing up doesn't and
is sure to cause health problems.
Eating egg and vegs from your hand is a good sign the little guy is
starting to get interested in eating on his own. Not sure about fish
though, nutrition wise.

Hopefully others will chime in with suggestions....
