Hi :)
If you have a good clean seed mix with no dyes or pellets or fruits or
anything, you might want to try soaking them before feeding them. This
starts the germination process (if the seeds are fresh) and turns the simple
fats into necessary fatty acids, adds LOTS of nutrition that is dormant in
dry seeds but comes to life during the germination process. After soaking
(12-15 hours is usually enough), rinse them thoroughly and you can then
feed. (Lots of sprouting links - 26 at the last count - at my website for
further info.)
You can also chop up raw veggies real fine, just about any veggie will do,
and offer those. (Sweet potato is a favorite here, with a little cinnamon
mixed in...either cooked or raw and shredded - cooked makes the Vit. A
content more readily assimilated but Vit. A is one of the biggest problems
in seed junkies.) Broccoli is another. All of mine love peas, both fresh
and sprouted. Birdie breads are great too, most loveys like those,
especially if you break it up crumb-size for them. (Recipes online - do a
search.) If you don't eat junk food, your lovebird might enjoy eating with
you and having a little of what you're eating. "Table scraps" are good for
birds, if your own diet doesn't suck <G>.
I've taken in a total of 5 loveys over the last 4 or 5 years, all of them
were seed junkies. Loveys (and cockatiels, and budgies) do well on a
seed-based diet, as long as they are also fed lots of other healthy natural
foods. There are some links in my sig file that you can click on if you're
interested, will save me from typing it all again here.
Good luck :).

Hi,
We use Harrison's Bird Food (the Adult Lifetime and High Potency
formulas) for our lovebird and just give her millet as a treat, and
she also eats fresh fruits and vegetables (she loves raw garlic,
too--go figure). Harrison's is very high-quality; I believe it is
human-grade food. You can find them online; just do a search and they
should come right up.
Also, Goldenfeast (dried fruit and veggies) is a good, natural
human-grade snack.
Good luck!

My lovie eats seeds sprinkled on top of a cooked starchy product (Beak
Appetite) in the morning, and seeds sprinkled on top of baby food (either
carrots or sweet potatoes) in the evening. All day he has access to
Nutriberries, either the fruit or vegetable variety. Some days he eats
heartily of one thing and ignores the rest, then the next week he eats
something else like it was going out of style. Occasionally I put broccoli
or watermelon in his cage on a fruit spear and sometimes he ignores it and
sometimes goes at it like gangbusters...
All depends on his mood, I guess. Just keep trying different stuff. I put
some kale on his fruit spear from time to time and get a different response
every time. Don't EVER forget the seeds, tho.
