Hello,
I am new to this group and need some advice. A local pet shop has a 5 year
old Goffin that had been abused in the past. He seems fine now, although
slightly nervous. He says "what"..that's it, and was enjoying playing in
his cage. Does this Too sound workable, my only experience is with budgies
and lovebirds. I do have plenty of patience, but do want a bird that will
be a pet...not a cage ornament. Would appreciate any suggestions/advice.
NOTE my proper email address is rsd@syd.eastlink.ca

Goffin Cockatoos make wonderful pets. It might take awhile before he/she
will be comfortable with you, but with a lot of patience and love. It would
make a wonderful addition to your family.

As hard as it is to type these words, I agree with Liquid Memory here.
I've had a goffin for a couple years, and she's a great pet. That's not to
say she doesn't have a couple behavior problems. Like being terrified of
my wife, who used to be her best bud. And I have read in a book (by Mattie
Sue Athan, if memory serves) that they are probably the single species that
is most often given up for adoption.
As cockatoos go, they can be pretty independent. And I'm always amazed by
her small problem-solving feats. Like how to get her CD collection (she
loves playing with the AOL CDs we get in the mail) from the floor up onto
the couch.
But that's my bird. I guess the best gauge of what kind of pet your goffin
would be is how she interacts with you at the pet store. If she's fearful
now, then chances are she always will be. Otherwise she can probably be
rehabilitated into a wonderful pet, especially if you are the person she
bonds to.
Best of luck,
Scott
