National Zoo Opens Bald Eagle Exhibit
The Smithsonian National Zoological Park last week opened its new Bald Eagle
Refuge Exhibit, which features two birds made incapable of flight by
injuries, during a ceremony attended by government officials and
celebrities.

Air Conditioner Failure Leads to Deaths of Animals
Twenty-seven parakeets, three guinea pigs, two rats and a hamster recently
died after the air conditioner in the pet store in which the animals had
been available for purchase stopped functioning.

According to employees of the store, a PETCO Animal Supplies outlet located
in Glen Cove, NY, the 33 animals were killed by "stress and heat" while
being driven to other PETCO stores in which air conditioners were working.

Disaster Relief for Animals to be a Joint Effort
The Humane Society of the United States and United States Animal and Plant
Health Inspection Service recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding
calling for the two organizations to coordinate their disaster preparedness
and response efforts.

Harbor Seals Shown to Differentiate Killer Whales
A study recently conducted by Vancouver Aquarium Marine Science Center
researchers has shown harbor seals to be capable of distinguishing between
killer whales that prey upon fish and mammals by their vocalizations.

Software Replacing Animals in Drug Research
The Central Drug Research Institute (CDRI) has begun using a computer
program that will allow the organization to reduce the number of experiments
it conducts on animals by 90 percent.

"Now only two or three of the trials (for each drug) will be conducted on
animals, compared to between 20 and 30 in the past," CDRI Director C. M.
Gupta told a British Broadcasting Corporation reporter.

Yellow Pages for Pet Owners Published
The Pet Yellow Pages, a printed directory of more than 2,000 animal-related
businesses being run in and around Sacramento, CA, was recently published by
an individual who has been producing specialized telephone books for more
than 10 years.

PETA Protests Against 'Running of the Bulls'
To protest the most recent "running of the bulls" in Pamplona, Spain, which
took place last week, approximately 12 members of People for the Ethical
Treatment of Animals got naked and then held signs reading "Stop the Bloody
Bullfight" in public.

Man Imprisoned for Animal and Plant Smuggling
California resident Robert John Cusack recently was sentenced to 57 days in
jail after pleading guilty to attempting to smuggle members of endangered
animal and plant species into the United States.

Cusack had falsely claimed to be an environmentalist who had purchased the
animals and plants in Jakarta, Indonesia and was taking them to a wildlife
sanctuary in Costa Rica.

Movie Prompting Demand for Clown Fish
Finding Nemo, an animated movie about a search for a lost clown fish that
recently began playing in theaters, is causing a dramatic increase in
demand - especially among children - for pet clown fish.
