Budgie. Male.

My experience has been that females make a lot of noise, but do very
little (make that next to NONE) mimicking. The males excel at speaking
your own language, and mimicking other sounds.

Individuals will very, of course, but if you want your male budgie to
talk, you must *SPEAK TO HIM*.

I agree. After Bubba got up to 64 words and phrases (his last one being
"Beam me up, Scottie"), I stopped counting.

Here's a little tid-bit to start another massive thread, at least I hope
not.

A bird talks by flattening its throat and forcing air from the lungs to make
a so-called vocal cord. If a bird learns how to whistle first, then the
muscles used to flatten the throat can't flatten it properly and the bird
can only whistle.

Never teach your parrot to whistle first, you may never hear a word out of
him/her.

One again, old wives tales or just plain B.S.

We've had tiels that learned how to whistle first and then learn quite a
few words. One of them learned how to wolf-whistle like a champ... later
on in life he added a "hey baby" after the whistle. Our TAG only
whistled when she came to live with us; and she's learned a few
sentences since then.

What? they didn't get the memo? The lines of communication on the bird
community must be severely damaged and our birds are not getting the
proper info on how they're supposed to behave; the other day I caught my
birds preening and they're not molting at the moment!!!

Once again you are way wrong LBF. My male cockatiel only whistled for the
first few years after I got him. Now he's saying words. Not many yet, but
he's whistling AND talking.

just imagine what your house looks like. Do you have to where waders, or do
you just go barefoot?

It's time to play...
LET'S ASK THE EXPERTS!!!

Question: Is it more difficult for a bird to learn to talk after it learns
to whistle physiological or psychological?

http://www.pethelp.net/talking.html
"MYTH: If you teach your bird to whistle, he won't learn to talk.
Since whistling is easier, birds that don't learn to talk often whistle very
well even if they never learn to talk. If a bird enjoys attention, and
talking gets more attention than whistling, the bird will talk more and
whistle less."

http://www.petbirdreport.com/articles/greytalk.html
where Sally Blanchard says:
"The young bird imitates the sounds we make to gain acceptance in it's
'flock' - us! Whistling seems to be a fun noise for birds because of its
high pitch. I do believe that a grey that is taught to whistle and is
rewarded with whistling before it learns to talk may not learn to talk as
quickly or as well. The parrot has no need to use words to get our
attention."

http://www.vdnent.com/pages/article..._train_alex.htm
where Dr. Irene Pepperberg says:
"If you want your bird to talk, do not first teach it to whistle. Although
birds enjoy learning to whistle, many people have had difficulty teaching
their bird to talk if it first learns to whistle. Don't teach whistling
until after the bird has learned its first words."

....and the answer is.....
..
..
..
..
..
..
..
..
..
PSYCHOLOGICAL!

So, gang if you want your bird to talk -- even after learning to whistle --
shower him with a lot of love and attention!
;?)

What a lot of tosh. The first thing my BFA learned was to wolf whistle. Now
he also has a huge vocabulary.

And he was probably garbling under his breath before he whistled.

I'm not saying that it is impossible. I am saying that if your bird learns
to whistle first with no word interactions, then most likely he won't learn
to talk at all. Most CAG's who learn how to whistle first never learn to
talk.

Tony,

Maybe it was just YOUR birds that couldn't talk after they learned to
whistle? I haven't seen anyone else so far who has expereinced that theory.
