in light of all relevant facts.

No it is probably not correct, but if she has taught her children not to
talk to strangers on the phone, then I see no real problem. Besides they
could e-mail her, and if they are smart enough and know how to use the
internet. They can find her home address. That is the chance you take when
posting any kind of ad, even in newspapers. I am sorry to say that our
world is full of people who will do malicious things, this is why we have
laws.

First things first, I give up about the top-posting...
Second things second, since she has set the wrong example by posting her
phone number on usenet, I doubt if her children have learned not to talk to
strangers on the phone. Besides, in addition to posting about the canary,
she has also posted (elsewhere) about baby-sitting services (again including
her home phone). She cannot be home all the time, so it makes sense that her
daughters are used to taking calls from "strangers" who call Mommy for
baby-sitting gigs... and now they are taking calls from "strangers" who want
to buy their canary. I doubt that her daughters merely take a message if
they are so excited about potential buyers. They will talk to the strangers
and perhaps even give out their address (either for babysitting or buying
the canary).
Third things third, yes, there are laws, but common sense can do a lot
toward preventing a tragedy.
