I just regained custody of my B&G macaw, who had been stolen. His tongue has
been split--not at the front, but the back 1/2. Can I get the thief for animal
cruelty? Would this be considered an act of cruelty?

If someone here tells you "yes" or "no" what are you going to do? Go to the
authorities and say "well someone on the net told me.................". If
your for real, which I tend to doubt, you should be asking the local
authorities who you reported the theft to. What your "told" here will have
no bearing on what happens in your case.

Good answer, Alex.
An avian vet would be the best person to
contact, IMO.

Get the vet's opinion and celebrate getting your bird back. You are very
lucky, indeed.

How do you know it has been split? Have you looked at other Blue and Golds
tongue to see if this is normal?

Best to get to the Veterinarian to verify first of your concern.

I also will take this time to say to you even if it is normal that you are to
be congratulated in your total observance and careful look see over your bird.

Please continue your observation for your Macaw for this is how one learns and
finds quickly that the bird might need immediate attention from a qualified
veterinarian.

After reading the post about the split tongue on the B&G I double checked my
Greenwing and as I thought he also has a "split tongue" in the back. I
still recommend having your bird checked by a vet but I'll bet he says his
tongue is normal.

It has been split. When I first got him back, he wouldn't eat and there was an
odor coming from his mouth. I asked around and figured it was sour crop. I made
a vet appointment, but he got better on his own.

Thanks for the replies, and as for checking with the Humane Society/Animal
Control there is one slight problem--my 7-year-old son turned the hose on our
officer the last time she came by my house to tell me my dogs were out! She
muttered something, as she dripped, that sounded like "You'd better never need
us again."

Unless a 7-year-old is being prompted by adults, directly or indirectly as a
result of a perverse attitude, forgiveness is likely.

Let me get this straight -- your bird was stolen, you got it back, he
wouldn't eat and there was an odor coming from his mouth, and you
"asked around"??????? If it were my bird we would have been at the
avian vet's IMMEDIATELY upon the bird's return -- and I would have
been taking my bird in for well-bird visits all along so finding an
avian vet in an emergency wouldn't be a problem. geeeezzzzz. . . .

Were you standing in the backround laughing? Why would your son turn a hose on
someone? At seven it's a concious decision. I can honestly say I do not know
a single seven year old who would do that. Has he seen you do it and thought
that's the thing to do? I'd hate to live in your neighborhood.
