Hello,
Our family currently has three pet birds (a Greencheek, a Cockatiel, and a
Peachface Lovebird).
My children (13 and 6 year-old son, and 9 year-old daughter) want to add one
more bird to the family.
We are looking for a bird that is gentle, not nippy, has lots of
personality and gets along with more than one person. Our Cockatiel fits
this description, but spice is the variety of life and we'd like to have
another species for pet number four. We almost bought a Maximillian Pionus
but got lots of feedback from breeders and petstores that the Pionus has
many great traits, such as being gentle, quiet, gets along with lots of
people, is affectionate, and is not nippy but personality-wise is kind of a
"lump" - no flames please this was input we had from others).
One breeder who raises every type of parrot recommended a Patagonian Conure
with the proviso, that it can be loud in the mornings and evenings. I've
been reviewing this newsgroup and find everyone who owns a Patagonian loves
its personality, but many say the Patty is very loud and loud lots of the
time, while others say the Patty is only loud occasionally
As an alternate to a Patagonian, a local pet store owner recommends a Meyers
in place of the Patty, because the Meyer is quiet and has the type of
personality I'm looking for.
Could anyone who has, or has had, a Patagonian conure or Meyers please
comment on your experiences with these birds as pets? The more inputs the
better. I realize every bird has its own personality but I'd like to get a
"general sense" of each specie.
Thanks in advance!

I have both and the patagonians win hands down. They talk clearly, and have
a good vocab' of several words and phrases. They play. One of mine was
taught to wave in a day and open her wings in 2 days.
She hangs from the top of her cage by her beak, legs and wings drooping down
like a strange fruit and looks at me with a beady eye while shouting
"Heeeeelp"!!!
She lays on her back on the floor of her cage and lifts a toy up and down
with her feet like it was a dumbell.
I have a breeder pair, which are not noisy, one of last years birds which I
reared and kept, which is not noisy, and this years babies which are just
weaned, and they are noisy. The problem seems to be that dealers see just
weaned babies, who will yell for food when someone approaches. They do grow
out of this, but the dealers, who may not keep them as adults, don't know
this.
Meyers are sweet and quiet, and they may even talk a few words and play, but
tend to nippy IMO and are not a patch on patagonians. Don't get me wrong, I
*like* my meyers, but from your description, you want a patagonian. All of
the ones here are gentle, even with other birds.
Just because a bird has the ability to make a loud noise once or twice in a
day is no reason not to get it IMO. They good bits by far outweigh the bad
in patagonians.
Take a look at 'Jessibelle' waving.

They certainly have lol. Jessibelle does it purely for fun, just liek she
lays on her back weightlifting one of her foot toys. All the while she is
watching me to see what I think of it. I am teaching her to say "heave-ho"
while she does it hehe.
