Hi. I have been lurking for a while and was wanting to ask about
bedding.I read the post from Grandma Jo about CArefresh and wondered
what's wrong with plain newspaper? I use it thick on the cage floor and
then tear a few pieces into thin strios to put over that. I also have a
used instant tea can in there sideways to serve as a hiding spot, but
mostly I think it's unused....
Oh ,I got another boy... So far I get the impression it's tacid
toleration. They haven't exactly been seen curled up together... But,
no blood shed either....
I don't have any rat pics up yet, since I got the 1st after these
photos were taken, but here's some pics I finally put up....

Bye for now

I actually use shredded paper as bedding. I have a paper shredder and I put
all old bills, letters, and sometimes newspaper and magazines through it. A
good, cheap bedding! To think I went for a few years when I first started
keeping rats using pine wood shavings from the pet shop as I didn't know the
dangers with it. One rat book I have even says the best choice of bedding
for rats is pine wood shavings... shows you shouldn't trust everything that
is written in books.
I've had a look at your photos but can only view the first six - the others
have a little red cross in them. Sean is gorgeous, and what a stunning dog
Delta is - looks like the two are best buddies, so sweet :o)

Maybe ten years ago I would have disagreed. But the inks they use these
days are usually very safe.
Newspaper won't hurt 'em, but the ink comes off on their feet easily so
they might have to groom more than usual.

I have a small paper shredder and get roll ends from the newspaper I work
for. I just shred it up and they love it. I use it for my guinea pig too.
I also line the bottom of the cage with sheets of newspaper to help keep the
bottom clean. It's an inexpensive and environmentally friendly pet bedding
and strangely enough I find feeding paper through the shredder very
therapeutic :-)

Yes, slightly blacker feet and grubby fur. On the bright side they love
shredding the stuff to make nests.
Other stuff is better at odour control and soaking up liquids thobut.

That's something to consider. I mean a paper shredder. I"ll get pics of
my boys up soon (the rats). They are both dark colored. I don't think
the ink will be too noticeable on their feet. I hung the can with a
thin rope knotted through a hole I speared in a tea canister and hung
it from the cage roof. Now the little one climbs up into it, but the
newer one still just buries himself in the paper... I wish they'd start
making nice.
