So in the back of a pet store, they don't have socialized rats for sale, but
they did have a litter kept as feeders.
The lady asks how big a rat I need, thinking I have a pet snake.
I ask her to upend the sleeping tube, and three adorable little babies run
out.
Each is 5 centimeters of physical perfection - two blonde hoodies and one
black hoodie - with terrified eyes, looking up at the latest wicked
monstrous predator to enter their tiny habitat.
If you try to grab one, they run away. That's why they are alive; they are
the shyest and most skittish survivors of a litter, and all their more
friendly, docile, and weak siblings are now snake poop.
When you grab one, they can't sit still in your hand; they will jump.
So, artificial selection has produced three perfect babies that I can't buy.
Will they be too hard to socialize?

Judging by what you have described they sound just like the last two
rascals I have. They were just the same. They were that bad that the
pet shop was giving them away. I just managed to get a hold of Lemony
but as we were walking down an aisle he lept on to one of the shelves. I
have had these guys for a year now. Lemony is in training to be the
next Alpha male. Both he and Patrick are still skitterish and dash at
the slightest noise but if I have food they are the first ones to come
up to me and take it out of my hands. I think it is ingrained in them.
I accept that they are not the most cuddliest of the bunch but they
are adorable and their behavior is humorous to watch at times. For me
giving them a home wouldn't require a second thought. They get on well
with their cage mates so they socialise with their own kind just fine..:))

I went to another pet shop, and rescued a feeder who was sweet, sleepy,
docile, and small. She was easy to grab; next in line for a snack.
