Best wishes to everyone and their rats for a Happy World Rat Day!
From http://www.worldratday.com/WhatIs.html:
"WORLD RAT DAY! APRIL 4, 2006! THE FOURTH ANNUAL, INTERNATIONAL RAT HOLIDAY!
April 4, 2006 will mark the fourth celebration of World Rat Day, a
holiday designed to recognize the fancy rat as a wonderful pet and
companion animal for people of all ages...
All true fans of the pet rat know that these dear, sweet animals deserve
greater recognition and admiration, and that their image suffers from
ignorance and unthinking prejudice. World Rat Day can be a day to win
back some respect to rats through positive promotion, or at the very
least, it will be a special day to offer delicious treats and fun gifts
to our pets, making some rats very happy and getting some cute
photographs in the process!"

It was on BBC News in the UK..... I had people who knew I had rats emailing
me the link.
I can also say, we need a WRD Hero... voted for by the ranks and those whose
every day is world rat day.
May I first nominate Robinson Crusoe Rat who escaped from the house last
september. I gave him up for dead but three weeks ago a passer by said she
had seen "something white" on my doorstep.
I looked through the front garden and found him, curled up in his nest which
he had made from stolen pieces of black bin bag and cardboard.
"Hello." I said.
"Hello." said he.... looking up at me with no trace of fear or aggression.
I leaned in, talking to him softly, picked him up and brought him home.
The first time I scritched him he started nibble grooming me. He was
overjoyed to have company again - and more so than a rescued feral dog. I
have never seen any animal more grateful to be back among people.
He does not yet have a new buddy but he sleeps in my bed, usually in a
sweater at the foot of the bed but he always makes his way up the bed under
the quilt to nestle under my chin during the night. He also hums in his
chest when he does this - nothing I have ever known rats do before. I can
only interpret it as a communication of pleasure, I have had many many years
of rat ownership but only when you get this close to rats do you maybe learn
more! He vibrates the sound in his chest - much like our own human speech
vibrates in ours, when you think rats mostly communicate in ultrasound, it
takes something for them to start doing something subsonically, it can only
be as a result of domestication like dogs bark/wolves don't and cats do not
miaow at one another.
I have just given him a small dish of honey, creme fraiche and plum jam as
his WRD celebreation treat and he is tucking in.
What a great little person he is.
6 months on his own "in the wild" and he is the sweetest rat ever, going
beyond normal to express himself.
He will get a rat buddy but for the first few weeks back with me he needs
time with me for rehabilitation not to mention quarantine, not a big issue
here in UK but i didn't know if he may have met wild rats and be harbouring
something serious.
Also I am thoroughly enjoying the closeness to a rat that many people can
only dream about... he is a blessing, and I would never have known my guilt
at him escaping could later turn around into such a sweet bond with another
animal.
