Hi Folks,
Just a quickie! Following Seb's castration a couple of weeks ago (which has
been really good, I am happy to say!) I have noticed this weekend that there
appears to be blood in Seb's wee :-( It's only very light pink but def not
his normal colour. Upon checking his under belly, the pink colour is on the
willy. It's not bright red and no drops are in the cage.
From reading on websites it seems it could be a UTI? I am going to book a
vets appointment in the morning but just wondered if you guys have had this
in a male ratty and all has been OK?
Thanks in advance x

I haven't had any ratties with that but I have read that it's quite
treatable. Poor little guy must be in pain... but as soon as he's on
meds, he should be right back to normal.

I had a female with that problem. The vet looked at a sample under the
microscope, but couldn't say whether or not it was blood. The vet
recommended we feed her a low-protein diet as it might be kidney failure.
The rat was already fairly old, but went on to live out the rest of her
natural life, eventually dying from other causes.

Hi Tania. I had a male rattie once with exactly the same thing - turned out
to be cystitis so this could be Seb's problem. The vet prescribed a course
of antibiotics which did the trick and he never came down with it again.
Hope your little fella is back to full health again soon - please let us
know what the vet says.

Howdy, how old is the fella? Most probably it's a UTI as you said,
which will need antibiotic treatment from your vet, but it could also
be kidney failure, especially if he's on the older side. Also a slim
chance of bladder or kidney stones or crystals.
Urinalysis by your vet is the best option for diagnosis.
If your vet does find that it may be kidney faulire, I suggest you try
your lad on some Ipakitine (known as Epakitine in the US), which is a
food supplement given to cats and dogs in renal faulire. It works by
binding fats so that they're thrown out of the body via the poo, and
don't have to go through the kidneys as wee, thus making the kidneys'
job easier and taking the stress off. You only need a pinch of powder
in something tasty every day.
Hope that helps.

Tania, how is Seb doing?

He seems to be doing fine thanks Tracey :-)
We went to the vets yesterday, and he examined Seb and couldn't feel any
lumps, or see any swollen areas so he said he thinks the tiny amounts of
blood I have seen in the urine is where the tube was cut and it is the small
remnants of blood from that?! I haven't seen any blood for a couple of days
actually so hopefully it is all OK! I have to keep an eye on it and take him
back if it comes back! Seb is and always has been full of beans and is
eating and drinking fine so I am sure he is OK :-)
Fingers crossed! x
