hot glue - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page

I'm trying to put together a staircase for our old rats so they can still get
around. I'm thinking of building one out of .25" (metal) hardware cloth, and
then attaching a finer plastic hardware cloth on top of it to prevent feet
from getting stuck. I think hot glue would be great for this, but I'm worried
it'll be bad for the rats. Does anybody know?

I wouldn't risk the hot melt glue - when set, it is very soft. I'm also not
sure what you mean by "cloth".

I would have thought a ramp made from metal mesh with any sharp edges filed
off would have been the easy choice - they shouldn't have any problem with
it - but surely your cage has this anyway?

What about the glue used to put aquariums together? I know those to be
safe because lots of rats live in tanks and I'm sure they pick at the
glue on the sides.

That was my concern with the glue as well. cloth is confusing, but that's what
the stuff is called in the hardware store. As to why am I making ramps? It's
because I made the cage, and never had any good ramps. This wasn't a problem
when our rats were young, but it's too burdensome for them now. I put together
a page describing what I ended up building today, complete with pictures of
the 2 types of "cloth":

That's an excellent idea. But meanwhile I came up with a better construction
method that doesn't require any glue at all (although it may have been more
labor intensive). I'll have to remember that next time I need glue for a rat
project.
