Frodo, the last of my first-gen =E2=80=9Cbrawny boys=E2=80=9D, has crosse=
d the rainbow=20
bridge under his own power this morning. He was 31 months, 14 days old.

Frodo had a rather sedate life these last few months. When his last=20
remaining brother, Stumpy, died, I introduced him to his nephews to keep =

him company. By Christmas, however, I knew it wouldn=E2=80=99t work out f=
or much=20
longer. While Frodo was able to remain dominant while he was mobile, he=20
began to suffer the same spinal degeneration that Stumpy suffered from=20
in his last weeks, and he couldn=E2=80=99t handle loosing his dominant st=
atus;=20
he kept being beaten up by his Nephews whenever he tried to re-assert=20
himself, and became chronically depressed.

I isolated him, and brought him out to my office, where he stayed warm=20
over the coldest months; heated from the underside by one of my giant=20
23=E2=80=9D monitors. Despite having only a serviceable front end, he was=
still=20
quite active, and remained so even up until this morning. When I took=20
him out he would often forget that his hindquarters didn=E2=80=99t work, =
and I=20
often had to restrain him by petting him vigorously. Which, of course,=20
he enjoyed immensely; he would often =E2=80=9Cwash=E2=80=9D my entire for=
earm as I tried=20
to keep him there. He would also heave himself up into a =E2=80=9Cstandin=
g=E2=80=9D=20
position with the bars of his cage, and use his head to =E2=80=9Cbump=E2=80=
=9D the cage=20
ceiling in his own way of asking for more food.

I remember feeding him at around 0930hrs this morning, because he had=20
been quite insistent. When my Father dropped by to visit at 1115hrs,=20
Frodo had passed away. It seems that he had died in his sleep, as he was =

stretched out in his cage in his typical =E2=80=9Csleeping position=E2=80=
=9D: on his=20
side with his back against the outside, legs splayed fully out and tail=20
curving around the perimeter of the circular cage.

Goodbye, Frodo. Be at peace with your brothers and sisters.

History:
In August of 2003 I picked up a number of rats from the SPCA. There were =

a number of younglings about 4 weeks old and one adult female. On the=20
16th of August, the female gave birth to 13 little ones. Once this group =

matured, I kept three males and three females and adopted out the rest=20
of the rats I had (over the next year or so, of course). Of the boys,=20
Stumpy and Keiichi have already crossed over the rainbow bridge; Keiichi =

was helped over it in late January 2005 and Stumpy motored over under=20
his own power in early November of the same year. Of the Girls, little=20
Skuld went quite quickly, dying quite suddenly in the early fall of=20
2004; a little more than a year old. Urd hung on quite a while, and=20
passed over the bridge early this year at around 30 months of age.=20
Belldandy... well, I *think* I still have her, as one of her daughters=20
was a perfect carbon copy of her, and I wasn=E2=80=99t too sure who I was=
=20
adopting out. I had to choose the one with the smallest and least=20
exposed nipples, and hope it wasn=E2=80=99t Belldandy.

Frodo is survived by four of his nephews (from Keiichi and Belldandy,=20
born 2Q 2004) that have returned to me; two are carbon copies of=20
Keiichi, right down to the ultra-gentle and calm dispositions. Frodo is=20
also survived by Belldandy, his =E2=80=9Csister-in-law=E2=80=9D (assuming=
that it is=20
indeed her and not her daughter), as well as two of her daughters=20
(Frodo=E2=80=99s nieces) that have come back to me as well.

If anyone in the Okanagan Valley has got an Agouti female that they=20
would like to breed with a very gentle Agouti buck, please contact me.=20
Frodo=E2=80=99s children are model Rats, and I hate to think that they wi=
ll be=20
the last of their line. They are incredibly gentle and playful, and only =

do =E2=80=9Cc=E2=80=99mere nips=E2=80=9D through the cage bars; I have ye=
t to be bitten or even=20
scratched by any of them. They are still very healthy, though, and I=20
hope to have them for some time to come.

I'm so sorry to hear of Frodo's passing. He obviously had a long and happy
life, and was cherished very much. My thoughts are with you.
