New cage (Ferplast Mito aviary) - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Tale
Hi,

Last week I've bought a new cage for my four boys. :-D It's a Ferplast Mito
aviary of 119.5 x 75 x 169.5 cm (that's 47.05" x 29.53" x 66.73"), so that's
more than plenty of space for them. This weekend I've decorated it and moved
the rats to their new home.

I've uploaded a couple of pictures here:

Going on the internal measurements on your site, it's just under 28
cubic feet, which is over 50% more than the Superpet Ferret cage. Enough
space for 14 rats. I love it :)

http://www.fancy-rats.co.uk/resourc...ew.php?c=4&p=58
gives a price of 225ukp. Ouch, but reasonable I guess. Did it come with
the shelves you have installed?

Ah, no: http://www.acrorats.homestead.com/cages.html, an extra 40ukp for
just three shelves, or is that just for the hammocks? If you don't mind
my asking, how much do you reckon the lot cost you, including fixtures &
fittings ;)

Our guys will have to start saving their treat money.

The cage came with bird accessories (it originally is an aviary for birds),
so you could indeed well say it came empty. :-)

The cage and the new stuff (2 shelves, 2 ladders, 1 tube, 1 hammock, 1
litter pan, 1 plastic house) cost me about 330 EUR. Of course I also already
had lots of stuff, so that will probably add another 50 EUR. All this sums
up to a total of 380 EUR, which is about 261 GBP.

That's a lot of money, but I do think it's worth it. My rats seem very happy
with their new home, but of course they are easily pleased. So far I am also
very happy with their new home, and I'm not that easily pleased. :-p

Thanks.

Agreed :)

LOL.

How about cleaning time? Do you have to take it all apart? The ferret
cage we have gets dismantled to the point where the bits can be washed
in a regular sized bathtub. Is that doable with the Ferplast?

How long do you think it will last? Again, with the Superpet cage
although the coating on the wires makes it easy to clean, with
disassembly every weak & doors being opened & closed dozens of times a
day, bits of the coating have been worn off & at those points there are
rust marks. Our cage is about 18 months old, so I doubt it would last
over four years. That would be okay for a cheap cage, but when we're
talking hundreds of pounds I'd hope for a five to ten year lifespan,
barring replacement of broken components.

I will have to take out the tubes and ladders to properly clean them, but
the shelves can stay in place. I can stick my head and one arm at the time
through the huge cage doors, so I should be able to clean it that way. I'm
not sure how long it will take to clean the cage yet, but I guess it will
generally take less time than cleaning my former cage, a Ferplast Jenny.
Then again, there are more tubes, ladders and shelves to clean now, so that
will take some extra time.

I know lots of people who buy these aviaries second hand, when they're
already a couple of years old, so I hope it will last up to 10 years or so.
However, I do think that within that time a couple of bars will need to be
repaired, and perhaps the coating will need to be replaced altogether.

The real question is, will I be able to keep this cage that long? *LOL* My
former Ferplast Jenny cage is only 1½ years old, so...

I don't really know yet. I have cleaned it a bit after I put it together of
course, but this weekend I will have to clean it for real for the first
time. I think the cage itself won't be too hard to clean, but I know that
taking the tubes etc. apart and washing them is a bit more work.

I did that when I lived with my parents. Mind, it was a five-bedroom house -
I can't do that any more since I moved somewhere a bit more modest - so
they've taken over our bedroom - I think we'll have to start getting
permission to come and sleep in here soon enough :-)

Excellent idea, that's what I've done and most of my rats don't live in
cages anymore.

Thanks everyone, I couldn't have it any other way now. Admittedly it
gets a bit noisy at night, but I'm used to it now.

The boys that I had who were too fat have now slimmed down to a normal
weight because they're having to work for their dinner now, they have
to come and get it rather than have it put right in front of them, and
everyone just seems happier.

the only downsides of it that I've observed so far is that they have to
have their own territories, introductions are a bit trickier than they
used to be, but it's always the same few rats who are the dominant
ones, and once you work out who they are, it gets a bit easier.

It would appear that the cage has grown, because I'm 1.78 m (about 5' 10'')
tall and I now fit inside the cage somehow: *LOL*
