I have always made my own hammocks with a face towel and paperclips through
each corner to attach to cage. Baby rats love sleeping in empty tissue
boxes (although these will be chewed to pieces after a few days!), but you
can buy nice pet igloos from pet stores. I also bought a small square
plastic tub from the local bargain store and cut a hole in the side to make
a cosy house which the rats loved.

I, too, use small boxes that are empty of their contents. Saltine,
oatmeal, tissue, etc, I used any cardboard box...my hubby throws them away
and I fish them out of the trash. Between my zoo, leftovers and trash, we
have a 'no waste' household.
For a more permanent shelter, plastic shoe boxes from the dollar stores are
what we use. In the multi-level cage one box is upright with an old shirt
or other bit of fabric, for a cozy bed... on another level a box is turned
over for a hideout. Different personalities, different sleeping/comfort
areas.
Hammocks, are sleeves and legs of clothing, cut off and hung with those
plastic straps used to secure wire bundles.

waste not want not.. or so they say ;)

We use babygrows, usually bought from Charity shops (for about 50p to
1ukp), with a jumbo paperclip through each arm & leg. They love being
able to climb inside :)
