Hi Guys,
Well, you may remember my post a few weeks back when I said that my adopted
brothers Beau and Sebastian had started fighting and had to be separated
over a weekend? They were OK for about 5 weeks and then last weekend they
started again!
I brought a new cage for Beau as he was so afraid and they have been like
this for a week now. I really don't want the boys to be permanently alone so
I have made the decision to have Sebastian castrated and he is going in
tomorrow at 9am.
I'm so nervous about it!! I am so scared he isn't going to come out the
anaesthetic! Am I being paranoid? I know loads of you have done this with
your boys and have had great results, and I know I have been putting off
this operation for ages now. At the end of the day, this is something I HAVE
to do because Beau cannot continue to be nervous like this, and I think
Tracey mentioned it to me, but Seb cannot live like this either because he
is always so stressed and he doesn't relax!
What kind of appearance shall I expect? Will his little testicles be fully
removed?! Will he be very shaven? Is there anything in particular I should
do to help him post op? How soon were you able to introduce your castrated
rat back to his cagemates? Thanks in advance for all your help!
I'll let you know how it went tomorrow, how the devil I am going to work
tomorrow I will never know! The vet said he will ring me as soon as Seb
comes round, and then I collect him around 5:30pm. xx

Aw...I know we worry so much for our little ones.
If the surgery goes like my guys, the testes are still there but will
shrink away within a month. He'll have one or two openings with stitches
or glue. There's really nothing for you to do. He should be fine and
nothing to worry about and I bet within a week or so, he'll be your
little sweetheart and Beau will have his cuddle buddy back!

The ratties I've had castrated were just fine, although my first castrated
rattie kept biting at his stitches and ended up with a bit of infection -
antibiotics and a few days with a collar allowed everything to heal up
quickly and nicely. The last rattie I had done didn't bother with his
stitches at all and healed up really quickly and the difference to his
temperament was amazing - the once aggressive brute became a soft cuddly
bundle. After a few weeks there were no signs left of any plums! There
will be only a small patch of shaven fur which will grow back quickly.
I noticed a difference in my aggressive rat almost straight away after the
op, but I believe it can range between a few weeks to a few months, all
depending on the individual rattie.
Hope everything goes ok for little Seb - I'm sure it will. Try not to worry
too much, I know, easier said than done but Seb is a young, healthy rat who
should cope just fine with the anaesthetic.
Please keep us up-to-date with how he's doing!

Thanks for the posts girls!
I am happy to write that Seb came through his operation fine and he is now
home.
He seems very subdued and skittish, it's as though his whole personality has
changed :-( I am hoping it will just be for a couple of days, and he is just
a little sore and bewildered after the op right now.
He's eating and drinking and he has had a little wander around the lounge
but he has no interest in me (almost like I am a stranger!) and definitely
no interest in running off to Beau's cage (which is a good thing for now!)
The vet did say to leave him be for a couple of days so I will try and do
that ......... poor little mite! At this rate, if I try and put him back
with Beau, HE will become the victim :-(

That's good to hear! After a couple of days I'm sure he'll be more settled.
Make sure you let us know how things are going regards reintroducing him to
Beau!
