We recently lost our 13 year old Golden Labrador to age and illness. While
the rats certainly keep us company, we've decided to start looking for
another dog. I know enough to stay away from Terriers. And I'm no kid
looking for his first pet, so I know that a well behaved dog starts with
good training. But I was wondering what large breed dogs other rat owners
have, and their experiences.

I'm of no help, my dog would eat them if he could. ;)

My family has a huskie-collie mix. She seems to have made friends with
Daisy - they're mutually curious about each other, always looking at
each other through the cage bars.

We have a german sheperd mix/male and a coonhound/female that let the
ratties climb all over them, they even try to mother them... the other dog,
terrier mix/female tries to ignore them and will snap at them if bothered,
but she is an OLD lady.
But, you can't judge anything bye my ratties and other 'kids'. I have
pictures posted of cats and rats loving on one another!

Not a large breed dog but, we had an English Springer Spaniel puppy about
nineteen months ago and I tried to get him used to the rats from his first
few weeks with us. He has never once showed signs of wanting to harm them.
My rats have been out in the kitchen and the dog has been in there - he
follows them around and vice versa. I'm always careful though as Springers
are full of energy especially when so young so I am wary of the dog getting
playful with the ratties and being a bit rough with his paws and all the
bouncing around stuff. My rats have always liked to sneak up behind the dog
and nip at his paws and or tail which gets the dog going and wanting to
play. Needless to say I would never leave them alone together, they have
always been supervised at all times.

Awww, I love Cavalier King Charles Spaniels - all the ones I've known have
had such lovely temperaments. I hope you will be putting up lots of pics of
the pups on webshots :o)

My Retriever Xantia who is 11 years old is one of those dogs that she sniffs
the cage, knows there is something in there, ratties come out to have a look
and they touch noses but no aggression from either side. But if they were
loose she would kill them!

I am sorry about your Lab. I know what a loving, loyal breed they
are..:) I currently have a large Giant Schnausser who loves the Rats
and will babsit any newbies. ( There is a picture of Ollie doing this
in Webshots) Our other large dog is a Staffie/Lab cross. He is
terrified of the Rats...LOL. When they are running around on the Sofa
he will walk past them by going as close as possible to the opposite
wall as he can...LOL. The Rats have never done anything to hurt him so
I can't figure that one out at all.

Thanks, all.
We've had both a Lab and a Husky with rats with mixed results. From what
I've read here and elsewhere, I want to stay away from Terriers because they
have been breed as ratters. Generally, it appears the more docile the breed
is, the easier it is to teach them to get along. Make no mistake about it,
I never have and do not intend to allow unsupervised time together. I want
to make sure we don't choose a dog that attempts to get to the rats while
we're out. Everyone here knows, not having rats is not an option.
To that end, a couple of fearless rats are going with us when we chose the
next dog.

Every rat should be so lucky as to go on such an adventure!
