I have many a discussion with my old mate Charlie. He is 70 ish . Anyway, he
believes that birds only mimic and don't know what they are saying. That the
vocalisations are simply random.
Today, I went to his place to collect a small alexandrine hen which was
originally a pet, but Charlie had bought to replace a hen,(mother to my
'Ember') which died the year before last. Anyway, this little hen (Now
called 'Alexis') is emaciated. She sits tight on eggs every year but the
cock won't feed her :0( So he seperated them and I said I would have them
both. I took the hen today until I have an aviary free for the cock
('Ember's dad),who will be bought a new mate. I put this little hen in the
cage next to 'Cuppy', the bfa. He took one look at her and said "Hello
Ember".
Ember has been out in the aviary with her mate 'Georgie' for about a year. I
phoned Charlie immediately to tell him what Cuppy had said and he was
amazed. I think I have managed to prove that they do indeed know what they
are saying :0)
