These little *******s are EVerywhere!! My cage bottoms are clean
and we're remodeling, so ther is not even much room for them to hide.

Freeze the seed mix and wait for the existing beggars to croak. In the
future freeze the seed before opening the bag. It will kill the larve.

I had this come up once. Had never had trouble, then one day had an
outbreak. Came from a bag of seed mix I think. I from then on froze the new
bags for a few days, and tried for a year to get rid of the damn things.
They just kept coming back. They would always start up in a closet were the
seed is stored. Took the shelves all out and scrubbed with bleach a couple
times, and I "thought" I had it licked. After a month or two all of a sudden
there would be another out break. I finally threw in the towel and resorted
to chemical warfare, but like you I did not want to. I try real hard not to
use pesticide even outside as much as possible, but it was a no win battle.
Now since I sprayed and always freeze the new bags of seed they have never
come back. Every time we had a break out they would be flying all over the
house, but the closet were the seed was stored seemed to be the breeding
ground, that was were they always came back. Guess the larva must have been
able to always find some crack or nitch to hide in when I tried to clean in
there.

After you get rid of the infested seed and/or other infested grain products [be
sure to check EVERYTHING in the pantry], these work quite well at rounding up
any remaining moths without the use of pesticides [they are little throw-away
cardboard boxes lined with a sticky goo (like tangle-foot) and baited with a
scent lure].

An exterminator can use a growth regulator in your home. As the moths fly
they come into contact with the miniscule bits that float through the air
and it renders them unable to produce viable young. The stuff hangs in the
air (you can't see it, it's smaller than dust and harmless to anything else)
for weeks. It's not a pesticide and is made precisely for ridding homes of
these things. Not too expensive, contact a small pest control company (such
as the one for whom I work) with personal service for assistance; the big
chains will most likely try to sell you a fogging and a contract. Much
better alternative than pesticides or fighting them for months and months.
You'll still have to get rid of all of your grain-based products (flours,
cereals, etc.) that are infested, and check places like wicker baskets,
valances, etc. for nests. And freeze your seed mixes, freezing cracks the
eggs so they can't hatch.
