Could anyone give me some advice on what I should do or what this is.
My parakeet is named Jack. A couple weeks ago I noticed he had taken
to the habit of occasionaly "biting" his legs. I really didnt think
much of it, but just the other day I noticed some bumps on his legs. I
really have no idea what they are. I dont want to take him to the vet
if its nothing serious. I took some digital pics and posted them on my
webserver. You can view them here:

Also, if anyone has links to some good sites on parakeet care, I would
be very appreciative. I've been reading some books and what I can find
on the web, but its proving difficult. Thanks in advance.

You won't know if it is serious unlesss you take him to a vet. There are no
DIY online diagnostics for sick birds.

Nothing serious? Would you go to a doctor if your legs looked like that?
Take the damned bird to a qualified AVIAN vet asap!
The poor thing has to be miserable. Nobody here can make a diagnosis or
offer any advice other than take it to a vet who *can* properly diagnose
and treat the problem. It looks very much like scaly face mites to me
(which can eventually kill a bird), but I'm not telling you that's what it
is because *I'm* not qualified to do so.

Cannot believe you are serious asking about your bird....Dont you notice
that the bird is very sick? Even if you dont know better just look into any
other bird and you can see that your bird is sick.
If you are serious about taking care of your bird, take responsabilty for
the well being of the bird or find a suitable house with caring people.

David G Fisher
Definitely needs to see a qualified bird vet (usually called an avian vet).

Would you waste any time in hauling your butt to the doctor if your feet
looked like that??? For the love of god, take him to the vet.

He has a bad case of scaly mite. He needs medication. He's slowly
dying. Please take him to an avian vet, and be prepared to medicate
him a couple times a day. Poor little thing. :(

Don't you guys read? He says :" I dont want to take him to the vet" and
what he means is that he could probably buy another 2 budgies for the
price of 1 Vet visit, excluding the cost of medication which would buy
another 2. Vet treatment would probably be a systemic, in all liklihood
Ivomectin, which in the hands of an inexperienced pet owner, would end up
killing the bird anyway.
This bird is not going to see a vet whatever happens, so lets tell him what
to
do for it, to make it's life a little easier.

Fella your bird has sarcoptes mite which will also affect the nares. To
treat it
apply a little olive oil with a Q tip around the nares and on the legs and
feet.
The oil will suffocate the mites and the scaly growths will fall off
eventually.
This advice is offered for the welfare of your bird. Not to save you money!
-Cheapskate-.

Stroud,

John F., didn't say that he didn't want to take him to a vet. He just
said that he didn't want to take him to a
vet IF it wasn't serious. . .

IF we can impart to him just HOW serious it is, I am sure that he WILL
do the right thing and take his bird to an
Avian Vet for treatment.
