LOST PARROT IN ST PAUL, MINNESOTA - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Dreamspinner3
Abby is a female Solomon Island Eclectus named Abby lost on the
Minnesota State Fairgrounds in Saint Paul, Minnesota on Monday 9/6/04
was last sighted in a maple tree at least 40 feet off of the ground_
on Underwood Street about a 1/3 of a block away from the pet
building._ The tree is directly in front of the tram stop on that
block and right across the street from the Arians equipment building.
Many people know the area as Machinery Hill.

Abby is a bright red parrot with royal blue chest and blue rings
around her eyes. She also has a silver leg band on one leg. She is
tame & will usually go to anyone.

She spent the entire day on the highest branch of the tree & wouldn't
come down._ We had no way to get up that high into the tree to get her
down--Minnesota State Fair officials wouldn't allow us to use any of
the trucks with lifts that went up that high due to insurance
regulations & none of the vendors in the area with the same type of
equipment wouldn't help for the same reasons._ WE ARE NOT SURE IF
STATE FAIR OFFICIALS WILL ALLOW US ONTO THE FAIRGROUND TOMORROW TO
RESUME OUR SEARCH!

Members from the Minnesota Companion Bird Association spent the entire
day with us watch Abby and tried to climb the tree but couldn't reach
her. Local news stations picked up the story and helped spread the
word._ We blanketed the entire area with LOST parrot posters and also
filed a lost item report with State Fair officials.

Kim my heart is breaking for you...you've done everything you can do to get
her back, and I will pray that you are successful. Flying down is a
difficult thing for a parrot to do, unless they've already learned how to do
so, hopefully she'll be able to make her way gradually down, or you'll be
able to otherwise get her back. I know how much you love your birds...

We saw her again today--and still couldn't get her down. She was
sitting in another tree about a block away from the one she was in
yesterday about 20 feet up in the air. We sat there for several hours
calling to her & trying to lure her down with food & another one of my
parrots, who is clipped & was on a harness & leash. She wouldn't come
down. We finally had to leave because we have the other animals to
care for & I started feeling ill--I am so exhausted from all of this.

I have to work tomorrow or I will loose my job & my husband has to
find a job, although he will go over to look for Abby in the morning.
I am sick, tired, broke, and feeling really down right now. Really
down.

I feel really bad for you, too....but how did the bird get the
oppurtunity to escape?

Were her wings clipped?

I'm a member of the local bird club & each year they have a booth
inside of a building out at the Minnesota State Fair. Members of the
club are asked to volunteer to run the booth with or without their
parrots to help attract new club members & to help educate the public
about birds as pets.

Abby's wings were not clipped--she is the only parrot I own that isn't
clipped because she is a heavy-bodied parrot (Solomon Island Eclectus)
and when she had her wings clipped before she would immediately fall
like a rock when she jumped off her cage & land on the floor like a
rock. She landed so hard that a couple of times she actually cried
out when she hit the floor. She NEVER tried to fly before really. So
we left her with a full set of flight feathers. We had her at the
state fair last year & on this past Saturday & she didn't try to fly.
However, on Monday something spooked her & she took off out of one of
the building's open doors.

Please don't lecture me about keeping a parrot's wings clipped--I have
learned by lesson more than you can know. I had my reasons for
leaving her unclipped which were okay until we made the mistake of
taking her to a place with unrestricted access to the outdoors.

Abby will be getting her wings clipped after a couple of days of rest
which will take place in her cage at home. It was suggested to me not
to do it right away because it would probably stress her out even more
& she doesn't need that right now.

Folks--please learn from my story and seriously considered wing
clipping as a method of keeping your parrots safe. I know a parrot
with clipped wings can still fly--but most of them can't fly nearly as
well as a bird with a full set of flight feathers! If you do keep
unclipped parrots please be careful! Very careful!

I will never place Abby or another one of my parrots in such a
situation ever again. If I ever do the state fair again, the parrots
I take will be clipped, leashed, or kept in their cage the entire
time!
