Anyone remember my little goffins (Maggie) which I got this year ? The
little one who had mutilated and been on prozac for years? Well she no
longer mutilates and is off prozac. I have been searching the country for a
similar sized cockatoo for her as a cage mate as I don't like birds being
kept on their own if possible. Maggie only responds to cockatoos. She
admires pandora the unsociable U2. She ignores everyone else. My
requirements were specific. HAD to be female. I neither want to breed nor do
I want to risk my sweet little Maggie with a male who might turn bolshy on
her during the breeding season. I could not afford to pay the nearly £900
for a brand new hand reared baby and most of them are not sexed by breeders
anyway. Well, I was talking to a dealer I know, who is a smashing person.
She genuinely loves parrots, has a houseful herself, and is one of a rare
breed of dealers who will refuse to sell a bird to someone who she thinks is
not right for a bird! Like a couple of weeks ago. Chap with young wife and 3
kids under 5 came in . Never owned a bird of any kind in their life before.
He decided he wanted either the moluccan 'too or the scarlet macaw. Knew
nothing about either species or bird care or cage sizes. She spoke to him at
length about why these 2 were not a good choice as a first bird with young
children and neighbours and tried to steer him towards more suitable species
to no avail. He left without a bird. No doubt he went elsewhere where money
was the deciding factor, but not from my aquaintance.
NAyways, I was talking to her about my forthcoming move to France and
telling her that I was not taking all of my aviary birds. I know she likes
conures and when I mentioned I had some she might like, she jumped at the
chance. Not only will they have the best of everything, I know they will be
safe and happy and I got a good price. Mind you, if she had offered me half
theamount another dealer did, I would still be happy that she got them.
ANyway. She mentioned that she has a little hand reared ducorps there. She
has had it sexed as she does all the birds, and disease tested against pbfd
and other nasties which is also something she does with all the parrots she
buys in.
I am going over on Tuesday to take my birds over and collect the ducorps. I
will be very sad to see my beloved patagonians going but in all honesty they
won't care who feeds and cleans them or where they are as long as the aviary
is large. And her aviary is 25 feet long. They are to be her personal
parrots. I still have 2 patagonian house pets, both from these parents which
I kept for myself.(Jessibelle and Olive)
I am so excited for maggie. After 12 lonely and unhappy years, she will
have a friend to preen and who will preen her. I am tentatively considering
'Grace' as a name for her, and my aquaintance says this will suit her.
Will post pictures sometime once they have settled in together.

I am exhausted. I took the birds over today and collected the little
ducorps girly. Introductions will be made int he next few days. They are in
side by side cages and both interested in each other.
For people in the UK east anglian region. I can highly recommend the people
at 'riverside aviaries'. They are the only dealers I know with a houseful of
their own pet parrots and who will refuse a sale if they think the people
are either not right, or who want to keep birds not compatible in aviaries,
not matter how much money that stand to make. The aviaries are always clean,
the people friendly and knowledgeable and their birds are all disease
tested. They are near Ely in Cambridgeshire.
The other thing I like is that if 2 birds come in that are strongly bonded,
they will never under any circumstances spilt the pair up.Special people or
what?
I am totally satisfied that they are the right people to have the birds I
cannot keep. While I was there a couple were buying bird stuff. They told me
they travel 160 miles every few months because the prices, conditions, etc
are the best they have ever seen!
They also stock the witte molen parrot premium I keep banging on about and
feed not only their own pets on it, but the birds they have for sale, unlike
most dealers who feed the cheapest to keep costs down. I cannot recommend
them highly enough.
They do have a website but I'm too tired to google for it.

Oh and on the way home I decided to name the ducorps 'Dulcie'. She simply
didn't seem like a 'gracie'. So Dulcie ducorps is here to stay :0)
