....you find blood in your multi-bird cage and can't figure out who it came
from? I have four male cockatiels in a large (cockaTOO sized) cage, the
bottom of which I just noticed was speckled with dried blood. All four are
feather-perfect and have no sign of broken blood feathers or nails, cuts, or
anything else wrong with them. I'm kinda conserned because I just noticed
that Baby is bullying his dad, C.J., around; and my 25 year old geezer bird,
Birdi, has apparently decided that he doesn't like that, and therefore goes
after Baby. It all seems to be on the level of 'squabling' rather then
out-right attacks, or so I thought. Now I'm not so sure. The other 'tiel,
Jr., just stays back and watches. Or it could be that they are all molting.

Well, that's his estimated age, we may be off by a year or two in either
direction. He was abandoned in the boarding room at the store I used to work
at by his last owner. Before she disappeared forever she said he was 18
years old. He then spent three years in the boarding room before I took him
home in '01. Um, looks like I was a little off, he's actually ~24 years. He
looks his age, for the most part he's healthy, except his feet are really
scaly and dry due to thin skin, and he walk flat on his hocks, although he
doesn't seem to have any problem perching. I suspect mild arthritis and the
thin skin makes him prone to bumble foot. I feed him lots of veggies and
seeds high in oils for his skin, and a couple times a week I add flax seed
oil to his veggies. He has natural perches I cut off our plum tree as well
as rope perches. He actually prefers being with the other 'tiels, for a
while I was afraid to put him in with them because I was worried they would
bully him and he was acting so old and run down, but after being with them
for over a year he has actually gained wieght and is much more active.(This
is another reason I don't want to split the boyz up).
I believe the oldest cockatiel on record passed away at the age of 36.

We lost our old fellow Chief this past year a 1977 hatch banded.
He worked a clutch of sterile eggs with his mate last season.

You know I have been looking for one of them, can not find one any where,
but I have a cool Hawian print from little Gloria C. Most likely wear it to

After reading that plum and associated trees were poisonous, I was too
scared to use them.
I have a 19 year old tiel in the aviary.

That's the first I've heard of it. They've had those perches for over a
year, they've chewed on them etc and no harm done. I've always heard that it
was *cherry* that needed to be avioded. I've given plum leaves and branches
to my birds for years and never had a problem. The tree I get it from hasn't
been sprayed in over 20 years.

Been using plum branches for years, I fear that maybe someone saw plum and
cheery pits are not good for birds and included the wood in the warnings?
