Hi all,
We have a pair of budgies, and this is the first time we've let them
breed.
The hen laid her first egg on Jun 21. Over the next week she added two
more, and only after the third did she actually start to sit on them.
On these dates, I expected that the first egg would hatch somewhere
between Aug 9 and 16. At some point she cast one of the eggs out of
the next, which then broke (or maybe because it was broken). When we
saw no action, we figured that the eggs were sterile, and were advised
to leave the nest alone until she "loses interest". A few days ago,
she started spending less time on the eggs, but still spends most of
the time in the box.
So the nesting box has the two eggs, and a lot of budgie crap. This
morning we found the pair copulating again, and she's taking a renewed
interest in the dud-eggs.
What should we do? Ditch the old eggs and boil the box before she has
a chance to lay more? Or is there no problem kicking her out of the
box for a time then replacing any new eggs that she may lay?
Any experience appreciated.
Thanks
Matt

I'm not too sure about budgies (it's been years since I had any) but I have
found that with certain pairs of society finches that the female will lay a
new batch of eggs on top of the old unhatched eggs. If the first batch
hasn't hatched after being a week late I always clean out the nest.. I've
never really had much problem with excess poop but It doesn't hurt to clean
out your nest box...keep in mind I am not an expert.
Hope this helps
Tania
