We're having a new carpet installed only in our family room today.
That is where our Congo African Grey lives in her cage. I'm going to
move her upstairs to a travel cage for at least a day because I'm
afraid the new carpet, padding, or something used in installation may
potentially be harmful.
Is this true? The carpet is Stainmaster. If it is potentially toxic,
how long do I need to keep her upstairs in the back room and/or what
measures do I need to take?
Thanks for your help. I've researched this online not finding
anything exactly on target.

Let your nose be your guide. Chances are, even if you
were to ask the installers, or the manufacturers of the
carpet, pad, etc you won't get a straight answer anyway.
If you can smell something from the new carpet it's likely
formaldehyde or other outgassing. Leave windows in the
room open for a week or two, or until the smell goes
away.

If your new carpet has a stain guard it could very well be teflon based.
If that's the case, you should know that YES, teflon is poisonous
(even to us humans).

Yes!!!
Not only are the carpets themselves toxic, but the adhesive and treatments
(stainmaster) are extremely toxic!

Teflon poses a threat only when it's heated to temps
beyond 500F, e.g. overheated cookware. Do a little
more research.

Rick,
I thought that the tempature was more like 300F.

Then we are all in trouble. It's all over your home from the plumbing to the
wiring. Guess we will all have to move into tents?

This comes from the Celsius vs. Fahrenheit. thing. Some time back someone
posted the Celsius # and ever since then people who want to believe PTFE is
the doom of us all latched onto that # as if it was fahrenheit. Not to
mention the computer they are using is full of PTFE, but I don't see them
throwing away the PC. <shrug>

Rick, you're wrong. All of the teflon added to the carpets doesn't stay
on them. It becomes airborne and is inhaled by people and pets. Look
into it.
Teflon PANS are only a problem when over-heated.

Just like Asbestos. Seemed like a good idea at the time. Teflon is the
same way. So yes, move into a tent, just be sure it's not treated for
stains first. :P

So again I ask, is there a single documented case or study
that shows people or pets can become ill from unheated
Teflon? So far all I've read are anecdotal claims.

To each his own I guess. I prefer to play it safe and steer clear of
that stuff. If you want it in your air, more power to you.
As soon as you begin to heat Teflon it releases harmful gases. Not 500
degrees.
http://www.mindfully.org/Plastic/Te...ne-NTP-Data.htm
It's dangerous stuff.. I don't want it near my birds. It's all over a
wide range of products but we can at least be aware of it.
