I'm back from my internship in Hawaii, and I just picked up my birds from
Wheeler's place today. Wesley, my Black-capped Conure watched a movie with
me today, well I watched the movie, and he hid in my shirt! Silly guy, I
think he's happy to be home. The tiels apparently enjoyed me letting them
wander the extra bedroom we're keeping them in. I have a new bird as well, a
baby Turquosine Parakeet, the daughter of a breeding pair that Wheeler
placed for me while I was on Maui. Don't know what her name is yet, although
I think I'll go my traditional rout and choose a scientific name for a
butterfly, I'm thinking maybe a Hawaiian one.

Random notes on Hawaii:

The Hawaiian Endangered Bird Conservation Program had their best year EVER
for the 'Alala (Hawaiian Crow), ten chicks were hatched, making it a 25%
increase in the number of 'Alalas. Four of those ten chicks came from one
pair at the Maui Bird Conservation Center, where I interned. MBCC also
produced something like 19 Puaiohi chicks for release (the total yearly goal
is 18), and three Mapa (Maui Parrotbill) chicks, as well as many Nene
(Hawaiian Goose) goslings.

The weather where I was was actually fairly temperate, I was 'up-country'
Maui, meaning about a third of the way up Haleakala. This meant that I did
not in any way shape or form work up a tan, instead I spent my days dressed
in jeans, T-shirt, and sweat-shirt. Only a handful of times near the end of
my internship did I ever where shorts to work, and that was because I was
mowing nene pens (hot, sweaty work, that). The center was in the middle of a
pine forest of all things, and it felt very much like I hadn't left Oregon.

During the '80s MBCC was a Medium Security Prison. In fact, if you look
carefully enough there are still many remnants of the old prison days left
over, powerful floodlights, solitary confinement, etc. One day I and another
intern dug out an old desk that had been left in Da Shop, and found that it
contained the prison records of a woman who lived in Makawao. This was a bit
confusing because 'The Olinda Prison Compound' (which later became MBCC) was
a MENS prison. I assume that the desk was her parole officer's or something.
