1. 3 inches tall when fully grown
2. black, white, grey feathers
3. orange/red beak
4. does not sing like a canary, but chirps
5. looks like a canary (same family?)
Any hints or suggestions will help. Unfortunately cannot get pictures.
Saw them at a home (in other words, a pet).
Someone pointed me to a Zebra Finch... but how big do these get?

They stay small, not as large as a canary.

Why don't you type in "zebra finch" at images.google.com ?
In case you can't do that....
Zebra finch:
1/2 size of canary
red/orange beak & legs,feet
males have bright orange cheek spot
normal gray have a white like breast (like a tuxedo)
black tear drop line under each eye
Canary:
twice as big as a zebra finch
usually red or yellow (no black or gray)
