Getting my bird to eat fruit? - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Northern Lights
Hi all,

I have a lineolated parakeet who's a year and a half. He's a wonderful
bird, healthy and all, but I can't get him to eat fruit and I don't
think his diet is balanced enough. He will eat banana (absolutely
loves it), but that's the only fruit he'll eat. I've tried apples,
peaches, mangoes, broccoli (which he'll play with but not eat),
lettuce... He also loves the raspberry juice I drink all the time, but
I won't let him have it because there's way too much sugar in there.
So basically, his diet consists of Tropican egg granules, bananas and
the occasional treat (a "garden mix" I take the sunflower seeds out
of). I know he should be eating more fruit and veggies, but he doesn't
like any... Any suggestions on how to get him to eat fruit? Or is
there any supplement that someone could recommend? There's nothing
like the fresh stuff, but if it doesn't work...

Thanks in advance,

NL
Joanne

Mix the banana in or smear it on food you would like to introduce. Cut the
banana and the new food into tiny pieces.

Birds and their diet is a constant worry. If the first suggestion does not
help you can try this.
Let the bird eat his fill an hour or so before bed time, then take his
food. In the morning offer the fresh fruit. After an hour or so take it
since you don't want to leave it out. Then later that day offer more, then
about an hour before bed offer the regular food again so the bird does not
go to bed hungry. Try this for a while and the bird should at least be
willing to try the foods you are trying to get him to eat. He may discover
he likes it and will be more willing to eat it.

How can you make fruit fun?

If your bird likes peanut butter, perhaps you could spread a little on the
fruit.
I usually put new foods in my bird's cage in the morning, before his gourmet
food.
He's eager to eat then and is willing to try, and fling, anything.
Good luck!

I have just spent 5 minutes with the goffins here, nibbling on baby corn
and offering her small bits. If she dropped the bits, I said nothing but
took a bite of a baby corn myself and made yummy noises. If she held it in
her foot, picked it up with her beak or even bit a chunk off an dropped it,
I praised her like crazy. I have got her from eating a nasty seedmix with no
fruit or veg, to eating a wide range now.She simply loves having my
undivided attention and sharing food with me.
I also found some birdy kebob things. I put small bits of colourful fruit
on it and hang it in the cage, try a bit of apple, tomato, green bell
pepper, banana, peach, carrot to make it look nice and attractive.

I have also linnies. DO you know exist a group of lineolated parakeet's
owners? You can find a lot of help specifically for linnies

Northern Lights
No, I didn't know about the group. Is it on Yahoo?

And thanks to all for your replies, there's a lot of great ideas I
will definitely try! I'll get that bird to eat his fruit, dammit ;)
