Rescue of Dove (or Pidgeon) - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Jean Staffen
I had a very strange experience this morning. I went out to fill my bird
feeder as I do every morning, and there was a full grown dove (or pidgeon)
sitting up stock still - with one eye open and one eye closed - inside the
bird feeder. I thought he was dead, so asked my neighbor to help squeemish
me remove it.

He reached in and took hold of it, and said it wasn't dead. It's beak was
splayed and it couldn't eat. I held it while he cut the beak back past the
split part with a pair of scizzors.

I put it in an old bird cage I had and mixed up an anti-biotic pill with
some water and fed some of it to him with an eye dropper. He drank right
away and seemed to perk up a little. Then I tried to give him some cornmeal
mixed with water, but couldn't get it up the eye dropper.

I asked a neighbor to take over since I have to go to work. She's had
indoor birds for years and may be able to think of something.

Any ideas? No, I don't have the money to take him to a vet. I'm elderly,
already feed half the county, including my own tropical fish, zebra finches,
cats and dogs.

Start by calling your local Humane Society, as they will know in your area
whom you should contact for help. Don't do any more antibiotics without a
doctor's supervision. Until they get there to take care of it, you may want
to try the following Pediolyte recipe to help with dehydration, etc.:
8 lqd oz water
1 tsp salt
1 tbsp sugar
But really, the humane society / spca should be contacted. Don't try to
rehabilitate the bird yourself.

Thank you for your response, but the little bird died while I was at work.
The lady I left it with said - on closer inspection - that it also had a
broken wing and a broken foot. Along with the broken beak, the poor little
thing didn't have much of a chance. I think it probably flew into a
building.

Or a vehicle. Wild birds don't normally fly into buildings which are large
enough to avoid.

???? I just watched one of the wild Japanese White-Eyes that live around
here commit suicide right infront of me today by flying into a window. His
buddy nearly followed suit, except he wasn't flying quite so fast and simply
bounced off.

In high rise buildings with large windows withno curtains behind, the sky
is reflected and it looks like clear sky. I can see how this happens but not
into the side of a solid building. I have no experience of high rise
buildigs mind you as I have never lived either in onr near any.
