egg laying PART 2 - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Jesse Hand
I have some pics of my lovebirds swollen vent. You can view them at:
http://www.pixelpages.net/birds/vent.htm.

Her belly is swollen as well. This is my first bird to be ready to lay eggs.
Can you tell by looking at the picture if everything looks normal?

All help is appreciated.

I should note that the pics are a little blurry because she was not in the
mood for a photograph. :)

Impossible to tell from aphotograph as we don't know what is normal for
your bird.Perhaps a vet might be able to tell?

Jesse Hand
Normally you can't see any of her vent. It is covered by feathers. Now when
She is climbing around her cage you can clearly see her vent.

To be honest I've never looked that closely when they're about to lay. They
normally spend a lot of their time in the nestbox rearranging everything and
being fed by their mate, She must be very tame; mine go into full grump
mode.

It does look as if she has plucked her belly to make it easier to heat the
eggs.

There are several specialist yahoo groups for lovebirds at
http://groups.yahoo.com . You could ask your question there. There is a
general LB_List and one for breeders called lovebird-breeders. The second's
probably the best to try (although I normally prefer the first) for your
question but don't let them confuse you with strange discussions about color
combinations.

BTW I'm not sure it's a good idea to hold the bird when she's "eggy". I may
be being overly cautious but I'd be terrified of accidentally crushing the
eggs inside her with dire consequences. I know you're probably very
worried/excited but she really might be better just left to get on with
things unless she gets into obvious difficulties.
