egg laying: when? how long? - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Jesse Hand
I think my lovebird is about to lay an egg. Her vent has been swollen and
her belly looks slightly bigger for the past 2 days. How do I know when they
egg is going to come out? Are there any physical signs I should look for?
How long does the process take?

Are there any signs of egg binding that I should look for?

I am new to this and have no idea what to do or expect. Thanks for any help
in advance.

The symptoms are described on both sites. If you see signs of distress, take
your bird to an avian vet immediately. Make sure beforehand though that you
have a vet who knows how to remove the egg if necessary. If they say they
can't, then find another vet.

Afterwards, make sure to remove anything in the cage that the bird might be
using as nesting material (like paper), and remove any enclosures (bird
huts) they are using as a nest box. Rearrange the contents of the cage, and
move the cage to another location in the house. Doing these things sort of
shocks their system, and hopefully takes them out of the egg laying cycle.

Difficult to tell. Probably less than a week.

Are you sure she's pregnant? Has she been pooping OK? Is there a "he"?
How old is she?

> Are there any physical signs I should look for?

She should have been plucking some feathers from her belly so that she has
an almost bare patch for transferring heat to the eggs.

wrt the laying itself, she'll probably get into a foul mood once the process
starts and shouldn't be disturbed unless she gets into obvious difficulty.
Has she got a nest box or a pile of shreds she's been building? If so,
she'll go there, sit, pant a little (dv) and out comes an egg or several.

If she hasn't plucked a bare patch and built a nest, I'd take her to the vet
to check if she's actually pregnant.

> How long does the process take?

To lay the egg? It depends on the bird's build, her age and IME if she's
laid before. Sometimes it just comes out and sometimes it can take a few
hours. Afterwards she'll probably have an enormous poop but don't worry
unless there is blood.

> Are there any signs of egg binding that I should look for?

Tiredness, stopping feeding/drinking, just sitting somewhere (often on the
floor), lots of panting.

Have you made sure she has lots of calcium? It's probably too late now to
help any eggs that have been produced, but she still needs to replace the
calcium she put into them. It sounds odd but they will happily eat
(sterilised) chicken egg shells. The usual block helps as well. Don't be
tempted to give her milk products!

She also needs her strength building up. There are special "egg foods" that
you can buy from a pet store. Make sure she has lots of goodies, fresh
fruit and veg. It's also a good excuse to give her all the stuff she has as
treats e.g. millet.

What are you planning to do with the eggs?

laying an egg should not take hours unless there is a problem.

Why not?? Mine regularly have yogurt, cheese, and cottage cheese. It is a
valuable source of calcium.

You want to start thinking *now* about what you intend to do with the
babies. What if the time comes and your friends don't *want* a bird?
What if you place an ad somewhere and get no responses?
Don't give birds away. What people don't pay for, they don't value.
Plan on keeping them all if nobody wants your birds. Once they are hatched,
they are your responsibility to find good permanent, knowledgeable homes for
them.

Well I apologise then. I didn't see that part of your post you see. It must
have become invisible somehow.

Jesse Hand
I do not have to go into complete details about the ENTIRE situation when I
ask a specific question. You do NOT need to make assumptions and play mommy.

Now lets stop and be friends. :)

But you do if you want ppeople to see the full picture and now what HAS
been done and what hasn't.

How the heck can anyone know what is normal and what you have ruled out if
you only want to tell half of the story.
I am fussy about who I have as a friend.

Jesse Hand
Molly- You are going on killfile. I have had enough of your weirdness.......

You really are a weirdo.......Like talking to Charles Manson on USENET!
