Getting an african gray - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Baerana
After wanting one for years, I'm finally getting an African gray parrot.

What supplies do I need? I want to make him as happy as possible, so I
want a good, big cage, and plenty of toys. (cost is secondary to his
happiness)

What size cage is a good size? Where is a good place (hopefully online)
to get a good cage? Where is a good place to get toys? Other supplies?

Are there any good websites for new bird owners?

My vet specializes in exotics, but I don't know if that includes birds,
so a site with vet recommendations would be great. TIA!!

It is probably best to look at cages in shops to get an idea of what they
actually look like, then try to find similar online. Buy as big as you can.
Before you consider getting a bird buy yourself some books. One on african
greys of course, then some others to let you know what you are getting into.

'Guide to companion parrot behaviour'
'My parrot my friend'
'Guide to a well behaved parrot'
'Birds for dummies'
are the ones I recommend.
Find out all you can about diet as parrots canot exist on a pot of seeds
daily. You need to look at sprouting, and which fruit and veg are best and
offer a variety daily.
Choose your breeder carefully to ensure that the babies he rears are played
with and exposed to normal household routines and noises and they they are
given a good variety of food with plenty of fruit and veg so that the bird
has good habits right from the start. Learn all you can about what is in
your home which can harm the bird, like air fresheners, teflon, cigarette
smoke etc. You need to do a good 6 weeks hard research IMO before you even
start to look for a bird.

Years of wanting and no research to find out what you'll even need to keep
one.

This is a very difficult concept for most to understand - Ask your vet about
birds.
