Hello all.. I am getting a nine year old cockatiel, and I need some
advise. While I have had cockatiels before, is there anything I have
to do differently since this bird is 9? (How long will he live? I
won't bring him home and have him die on me, will he?)
The poor baby needs some help. He hasn't been handled much, pulls out
his feathers, hinds in the bottom of his cage, under the paper... and
only has only been fed seeds. I know he needs pellets- how do I wean
him off the seeds? I know he needs to be offered fresh veggies... and
lots of lov'n. He allows me to take him out of his cage, with
protest...
Also, since birds are social animals, I have been contemplating
getting a budgie or two in a separate cage to keep him company during
the day. Would this help the screaming? I want to get some birds
anyway, so it isn't just for the cockatiel, but after quarantine,
should I keep them in separate rooms or will they like the company?
ick. Im rambling...
The cockatiel will be coming home with me in a couple of weeks- much
to my husbands delight Im sure.. and I would like to be prepared.
Thank you!

Not really... just provide the bird with excersice, a high quality diet
and good socialization and it should be just fine.

Sorry, cristal ball is out of service at the mo', so I can't answer those
2 questions.

The only cases of cockatiels feather plucking that *I* know of have been
caused by giardia infections. The first thing you'd need to do is shell
out some $$$ and take the bird to a qualified vet for a check up (make
sure they do bloodwork and check for giardia).

Cockatiels don't "NEED" pellets. They do just wonderfully on a balanced
diet of high quality seeds, fruits, veggies, grains, etc.

It might, it might not... you might end up with a bunch of screaming birds
instead. btw, I'd hold off on getting any more birds until you get this
one treated.

Yes you are... but I don't see why they couldn't be in the same room.

Please don't force pellets on your 9 year old bird!!! You can add
some pellets in a separate dish, or sprinkle a few over his seed if
you insist on using them, but he doesn't NEED them. None of my birds
will touch pellets, even though they are offered every single day, and
all four of them are healthy, happy, active pets!
As for fresh foods...put some chopped up fresh veggies in a cup first
thing in the morning, day after day, until he gets curious and
possibly tries them. Hang a wet romaine lettuce leaf or kale or a
piece of broccoli inside the cage for a couple hours a day. Once
he's comfortable with you, stand in front of him and eat the veggies
yourself; my birds have to have some of what I'm having, even if it's
good for them. ;) Make birdie bread containing veggies and put some
in a cup in his cage. Make sure you do the mmmm mmm sound when you
do. :)
Congrats to you for taking in that needy little bird and giving him a
loving home!

That's exactly what she said she was going to do - force the bird to eat
pellets. Or maybe you just made that up for some stupid dumb ass reason.
