(Ok, I can never think of good subject lines.)
Rascall, my newest and wildest ferret, had problems of pooping in the
wrong places and digging in the food bowl. I have finally been able to
correct these behaviours. Yea!
The usual trick of covering the floor with blankets didn't discourage
him from pooping & peeing in the wrong places. I ended up installing a
couple of corner litter trays and filling them with water instead of
litter. This worked out great because it not only eliminated (?) the
poop in those corners, but they now love to drink out of it and use it
to groom themselves. Eventually, I eliminated all the wrong poop
corners, so now there is only one place left.
The bowl problem was solved simply by squirting laxatone and/or
ferretone on top of the food. They love to eat it, but don't like to get
it on them because it's sticky. Of course, if they do get it on them,
they can now go to the corner and wash off.
I can't really say that they're trained. I've only reduced their
options. Outside the cage, it's still anything goes as far as pooping.

Do becareful about putting ferretone on top of the food. Ferretone can make
the food go rancid. I like your idea about changing the corner boxes from
litterboxes to water dishes though!
