A friend of mine called tonight to say that her ex-sister-in-law has
"rescued" a ferret. I guess she's had this ferret about a month and now the
ferret is gaining weight and her nipples are starting to protrude so she
thinks she's pregnant. I don't know anything about this ferret but my
friend is trying to talk her into giving the ferret up and sure enough
she'll be coming here if this happens. I don't see this girl giving the
ferret up easily though. :( So we'll see how it goes.

Yikes! I think there is info on http://www.ferretcentral.com about
pregnancy and birth.......but I"m not sure about it. Might want to check it
or get in touch with some other folks who breed and get info........if not
for you, then for your friend's sister in law. One thing for sure, they are
going to need to get her spayed after she has those kits. Unspayed, unmated
jills die from anemia. I'm sure there's lots more she needs to know about
what to feed nursing jill, etc. Hope you get her - at least we'll know
she's in good hands. :-)) I know that's just what you wanted to do.
Awwwwwwww...........

They start showing , if I remember correctly, about two weeks before birth,
so watch out! Babies on the way! o,o

Well that's good to know. I'll have to let me friend know that. I don't
have any contact with this ex-sister-in-law so hopefully I'll get some
information. I'm still hoping it's a mistake that she's pregnant.

Gestation in ferrets is 42 days...your vet should be able to palpate kits at
this point if so...the jill should be on vitamin supplements including Ebsilac
as she is eating for all of them.
The jill should pass a mucous plug about 24 hours before birth. She should be
in a cage with a solid bottom for ease of cleaning and to keep the kits safe.
About 10 days before birth, the jill should begin to lose her hair..she will
look like someone gave her a military "high and tight" cut.
I'm going to assume this is a young jill and probably her first litter. Now is
a good time to line up possible foster jills in case there is a problem. I
think the most days difference between litters you want to go is about a week -
10 days.
I hope she does give them up - before she gives birth. That is not a good time
to add stress to the jill.
Let us know how it goes - and good luck!

Thanks for all the info, Lisa! I still haven't heard back about the jill.
:( So I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I know this lady probably has not
taken her to the vet as she's barely getting by (from what I hear). I've
also heard that she has a couple dogs as well, so I'm not sure what the
ferret is eating. Makes me nervous though.

Instead of giving up the ferret, why not let her loan it to you for
the duration of the bith and weaning. If she wants, let her pick out
a kit. Be sure she knows that both ferrets need to be fixed. Then the
rest of the kits can be placed.

Not a bad idea. Could be something that would at least allow us to get the
jill into good health and if there are kits give them a better chance.
Thanks, Kathy. :)
