wilson and rat tail question? - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
Brian S.
Curious if this is serious or not. Before wilson had blackheads on his tail.
i cleaned them with antibacterial soap and it went away. Now his tail from
the tip to about an inch before the end is turning an orange/yellowish. I
did the same thing and it appeared a little better. No difference in any
eating or drinking etc. I was wondering if this is another case. i read in a
ferret magazine that they emit an oil from their tail and it can build up.
It appears he has all his hair, but it looks thinner as the orange makes it
that way. Anyone have a clue? He is going for a check up in a month or so.
but i would take him now if it seems that this is a sign of adrenal or
something else. He is soon turning 3. Maybe i am just worried over something
that is easily taken care but in any case i thought i would post here. This
is only my second fuzzy.

Thanks In Advance,

Brian s. and wilson who has a slightly discolored tail but a big appetite.

........... forgot to add that he hasnt been out all summer due to it being
over 85 and humid and has been in the air at 73 degrees. If he breaches my
room he coughs due to the humid air.. if that makes any difference.. doubt
it but i wanted to post.

Just remember, there's no need for a full bath, just the tail works fine.
:) Like I said though, do be on the lookout for adrenal as he is
approaching the age in which you see more cases. But I think you have a
simple case of rat tail. Unfortunately, I don't have much respect for the
breeding Path Valley does either, but that's neither here nor there. :)
Actually I'd love to get my hands on the person that bred my Persian, while
he's adorable you can't help but feel sorry for him.

Well Brian, in my opinion, they're really no better than MF. While I'm not
anti-breeding entirely, I just don't agree with large farms trying to turn a
buck by breeding animals for pets. I wouldn't stop you from buying a kit
from PV, but I don't necessarily encourage it either. I'd rather see you
find a ferret shelter and adopt Wilson a brother.

thanks, i understand that. there are so many in shelters that would love a
good home. then there are the money breeders who sell them to pet stores
only to have them in a glass aqaurium... they are not fish for crying out
loud. but i do understand what you are saying.

Pam
Sounds like rat tail, oil build up. Sometimes, you can cleanse to much.
As far as adrenal, all the years I've had ferrets, only one (Phoebe at
10.4) is adrenal. She's a Triple F ferret. None of my Marshalls ever
got adrenal, insulinoma, etc.

Pam & The 20 Maniacs

Pam
Use a soft tooth brush and only do the tail.
