NFR: Bath Time For Sara - CLICK HERE for the Pet Manual Forum Home Page
So........this afternoon I'm down on my knees next to the shower stall,
leaning into it, with a latex glove on my right hand that has the fingers
and thumb covered in Vaseline. I have just finished expressng Sara's anal
glands. That's how they say it nicely, but there is nothing 'nice' about
this task. This is the job I hate most in the world - ewwww, stinky.
There's no way around it, but it has to be done.

The shower is one that is bi-level - has a set shower head and also a
handheld that it can change to at the switch of a lever. I'll rinse the
nastiest of the stuff off my glove, then turn it inside out as I take it off
and put it in the kitchen trash can so the ferrets can't get to it. Every
bath for Sara starts like this - it's just one of those things that you have
to do when you have a dog with allergies. I gag every time - it's just part
of the process after so many years of doing this. The single knob
adjustment on the wall makes it easy to get the water temperature just
right.

Just as the temperature gets just right, with my left hand I reach for the
handheld that is spraying gently on the floor of the shower, so I can rinse
off the glove on my right hand. Just as I pick it up, I accidentally hit
the lever on it that redirects the full flow of the water back up to the
wall above me - SMACK! SPLAT!! &%$*#......water hits full force from
above - into the right side of my head, my glasses, my hair, my ear is
ringing, water is dripping from my chin. Automatic reflex takes over and I
grab the water-assaulted right side of my face with my right hand - which is
still wearing that not-yet-rinsed-off-nasty-anal-gland-squeezin' glove. As
I am wiping the water from my right eye, I realize that I am still wearing
*THE* glove and my nose reinforces that realization immediately.......I've
smeared it all over my eye and the side of my head and in my hair.........

Earlier today I had called several dog grooming places because I thought
maybe I wasn't feeling quite up to this job this time. At the time I made
the inquiries, I *thought* $45.00 seemed like an outrageous price to pay to
have someone else do this job for me.

Isn't it interesting how wrong we can be sometimes looking back upon the
decisions we have made in the course of our day??????

Ugh. Ferret anal glands are nasty smelling when they let loose, but it's
temporary and tolerable. LOL.

Our Jake wasn't neutered, nor was he descented when we got him. The
neutering had to be done because he was too aggressive to the other ferrets
and he stunk to high heaven. The vet wanted to descent him at the same time
as the neutering but we opted against it on the advice of a very
knowledgable ferret breeder. She said that it's not really necessary,
because they don't express their scent unless it's necessary (just like a
skunk), that its very expensive, and the proceedure has a potential to cause
health problems later in life. I'm glad I listened to her..we saved a ton
of money and we really don't notice that he still has the scent glands and
thank goodness we don't have to express the glands. Ugh...I couldn't
imagine. LOL

Every once in a while if Jake is startled, excited, or if he gets mad at the
other ferrets he'll let one of his "killer farts" go and BOY does it clear
the room! Everyone runs for cover. Luckily, the stink doesn't last long
and we end up getting a good laugh out of it because Jake just looks at us
like "Whaddid I do?" . Even the other ferrets run for cover. LOL

ROFLOL!! That is so funny! I've never had a ferret who had intact scent
glands in the rear end (they do have some much kinder scent glands around
their faces that give them that nice 'musky' smell when you cuddle :-) I
think it's hilarious that even he doesn't understand where it comes
from.......LOL......and I can only imagine what it must smell like. The dog
runs us out of the room often enough, thank you very much :-))

Yep, happens to dogs quite a bit, I'd say. We had an akita/lab mix that had
infected/impacted anal glands and the vets had to sedate him to actually
squeeze the junk out. He was a 130 pounds and I don't know what they used
to sedate him with, but it was not fun trying to walk him out to the car.
He was walking drunk and smelled like he'd been skunked. Poor guy. As for
ferret poofs...they're not as bad as dog anal gland smell....yuck. It
dissipates pretty quickly.

Pam
I have one ferret who isn't descented. Alas, she hates strangers, until
she gets to "Know" them. What Buffy will do, if she hears a strange
voice, is run down the stairs all puffed up. Of course the person
thinks, ahhhhh, what an adorable ferret and they pick her up :o) Well,
needless to say they get it. It lasts only several minutes (the smell),
but oh, the look on the peoples faces is priceless. I do warn them
ahead of time, but, they don't listen!! After Buffy does let loose,
she's fine, no problem. Her nickname is "Buffy Puffy"

Pam & The 20 Maniacs

I had three 'scented' ferrets. Each one was a whole ferret when they
arrived here. The first to get nutted was Bancho.

I got a call from the vet's office, letting me know how that little boy
emptied the operating suite! Guess when they put him out, he relaxed his
scent glands and....well...the surgery was delayed 30 minutes while they
aired out the room! LOL!

LOL, all of you aren't used to much ;-) All my ferrets are scented, it's
illegal to descent here, and one of them manages to poof almost every
morning when he's out playing with his ladies........
