Our fuzzie, Cosmo, just loves to chew on rubber. The problem is that
he destroys it way too fast. He tears through latex squeak toys in less
than a day. Hence, I stoppe getting them for him. I did get him a hard
rubber ball with a bell in it, but he doesn't care for it too much. He
likes the soft chewy stuff, like tool handles and medicine dropper bulbs.
Does any have suggestions of chewy rubber products that won't fall apart
on an enthusiastic ferret?

Whew.....rubber toys are a death sentence for ferrets. They get the pieces
i their stomachs/intestines and it causes blockages. You need to remove ALL
rubber of any kind from his reach.
Also, you are goign to need to do some serious intestinal cleaning out of
that little one, or you are sure to encounter an intestinal obstruction
somewhere down the road. They can only partially obstruct for a while, but
will eventually cause a full obstruction and that can cause death in less
than 24 hours. First priority: know the symptoms of obstruction -
vomiting, diarrhea, skinny poops OR no poops at all. If he shows any of
these, get him to a vet immediately. He will probably need surgery to remove
all the junk out of his intestines. YES, it's emergency enough to pay that
extra charge and go to a 24 hour emergency clinic. Just be sure the vet
doing surgery on your ferret is experienced in ferret surgery because
ferrets are different than cats and dogs. They need extra precautions to
keep their bodies warm during and after surgery AND they need extra subQ
fluids during and after surgery also.
Here's what you can and should do immediately (after removing ALL rubber
products from your ferret's reach): Give at least 1/2 tsp of vaseline (yes,
he will eat it - mix in a little ferretone if you have to to get him to take
it) OR any kind of cat laxative (they usually like malt flavor) about 3 or 4
times a day for up to a week. This will help clear all the stuff that has
already accumulated in the stomach and bowel (hopefully) and may save your
ferret's life today or sometime in the future when it moves around and
obstructs. Then, continue to give vaseline or lax or some sort - about a 1"
strip, or 1/2 tsp - twice a week for a while. After about a month, go to
giving it only once a week, but continue to give it once a week forever.
Every ferret should have either vaseline/ferretone or cat laxative once a
week just to keep the bowels clear of obstructions/ hairballs, etc.
Your lack of knowledge about ferret care could well have cost your ferret
his life and may still cost him his life if you don't followup immediately
and do the necessary things to help him out of this problem. Trust me, if
he's been eating latex, there IS a problem. It is imperative that you
locate a vet who specializes in exotics, ferrets especially and know how to
contact him should symptoms of a blockage appear. You can find a vet close
to you here (they are listed by state and city) or you can post where you
live and folks here will try to guide you to someone who works with ferrets
regularly: http://www.ferretcentral.org/for-others/db-vets.html
PLEASE, PLEASE get informed about your ferret, how to ferretproof your house
to keep dangerous objects out of his reach (latex toys aren't the only
danger to your ferret!) and how to keep your ferret safe and healthy. Also,
how to choose a ferret vet and what to do in case of emergency - and what
constitutes an emergency. Ferrets are very different than cats and dogs and
can die very very quickly if they begin vomiting or stop eating or drinking.
An excellent book is "Ferrets For Dummies" by Kim Schilling. I highly
recommend you get this book. It's very reasonably priced here:
http://www.half.com . Also, you can get some ferret information at
http://www.miamiferrets.org and http://www.ferretcentral.org . Please,
for your ferret's wellbeing, do some reading and save his life.
If you need help or have questions, don't hesitate to come here, but it's
not good for your ferret for you to rely on this or any other newsgroup. It
is your responsibility as a ferret owner to have some knowledge of what your
ferret requires for a safe environment, healthy nutritious food, and lots
and lots of other information if you want you ferret to live a long, healthy
life.

BTW, your ferret is not unique..........all ferrets love these kinds of
items. It's up to us as their owners to be sure they don't get ahold of
them. Just as children love candy and playing underneath cars - don't
trust that what your ferret WANTS is what is good for him!!

Hmmm, latex has it's own flavor and consistency. If he really likes rubber
though, purchase a small KONG, in the dog section. They are designed for
aggressive chewers. Have yet to see one crack, peel, or fall apart even if
left outside in weather for years.
I think they now come in different shapes.

mellow out...:)
I guess my posting was misleading.
I said "tears through latex". I meant he starts perforating the latex,
Not that he is tearing it into pieces.
I've always taken the toys away before he starts breaking off any bits.
And as I said I don't get them for him any more.
I know about ferrets and how to take care of them

Yeah, i was thinking about trying one of those KONGs.

Maybe you should try the "Foamy Fries" or "Cheweasels" - both products i
believe are made by HyperFur. Check http://www.theferretstore.com for them.
I would think that the closest to the vinyl would be the foamy fries. They
are made out of perfectly safe ingredients that dissolve in the tummy.

Glad I'm not the only one out there testing the stuff. ;-) lol They are
pretty good and now they're coming in different flavors! FWIW, don't ever
buy a kitty kong. Chewers can get through those in a couple of days. They
loved to carry it around, but it wasn't worth the risk of a piece falling
off. Kolby loves the nylabone ferret chews. I think there were two
different kinds, a hard kind (which we have now, bought from the ferret
store) and a rubbery version, but I haven't found that in awhile. Last time
I saw them Mary Van Dahm was selling them at a ferret show.

According to my vet, yes.........also pig ears. None are safe except the
ones made of cornstarch that dissolves in the stomach. Nylabones or
N-bones. The HyperFur products are also safe, as they dissolve in the
stomach (foamy fries and cheweasels).
