Quasimodo's problem with the front tooth was that it was actually damaged
and infected. They say it was most likely painful.

So, he had to have it taken out on Tuesday. He's back and has ceased
chewing the food bowl, so I guess that was it.

It's a wonder that, despite the infection and the pain, he remained his
sweet chubby old self.

Awwwwwwwww, poor Quasi!! Good thing you had him checked out, Bill. Glad it

They get a certain amount of plaque build up between vet visits. Except
under very bright light, the infection looked just like plaque build up. I
check their teeth weekly (Saturday or Sunday) so I'd seen nothing amis. It
was his chewing the bowl which got me curious, so rather than just getting
him under the hall light, I brought him in to my desk and got him under the
desk lamp and had another look. I was going to take him to the vet anyway
due to the change in behavior, but I'm glad to have learned this bit about
what an infected tooth looks like. I'll know better how to check him and
the others in the future. He seems to be doing fine. Thanks for the good
thoughts.

Was the gum around the tooth reddened at all?

Actually, no. There was a white area. Redness is exactly the sort of thing
I look for during the weekly checks. Well, that an cracks and chips and so
forth and to make sure their gums are that healty pink you want to see. But
the usual check was to catch them while they were playing, get them under
the hall light, get them to yawn and look them over.

The problem was that his teeth, especially the front ones, are very uneven.
What appeared to be the greyish/black tartar build up was actually the gum
going greyish/black around the tooth. His gums remained a healthy pink
color everywhere else. When I got him on his back and tickled his yawn
reflex under the desk lamp, I could just see a very thin white outline above
the grey area, and could see that the grey was the gum and not his oddly
aligned tooth. I think if his teeth had been straight like the other
ferrets, the grey patch would have stood out.

So, all their checks are on the desk from now on. They get a little reward
for cooperating by getting to explore the desk for a few minutes after they
get checked out. I suppose the novelty of that will wear off after a while,
but it seems to keep them happy for now.

Hmmmmm........that's good to know, Bill. I would have been looking for
redness on the gum and assumed that everything was okay if there was no gum
redness. Good thing you were paying attention, that's for sure!
